Zadig ou la Destinée ‘Zadig atau Suratan Takdir’ (1747), merupakan hikayat pertama Volaire yang mendapat sukses besar. Kisah Voltaire sesungguhnya amat sederhana, dapat membuat pembaca dengan mudah dapat menangkap alur ceritanya ke dalam pembacaan yang linear. Suratan Takdir adalah menceritakan kisah seorang pemuda bernama Zadig, yang kaya, tampan dan dermawan, kemudian memadu kasih dengan seorang wanita cantik jelita bernama Semira. Akan tetapi Semira meninggalkannya ketika Zadig mendapatkan kecacatan (Mata Picak) karena menyelamatkan Semira dari bahaya. Perjalanan cinta Zadig kemudian berlanjut kembali dengan seorang gadis biasa bernama Azora, dan ternyata kandas juga. Zadig kemudian lebih memilih untuk memahami filsafat hidup dan belajar untuk mencintai alam, membuatnya berkelana ke berbagai negeri, kerajaan, menjadi budak, hingga bertemu dengan pertapa dan berbagai macam orang lainnya. Makna sesungguhnya yang diungkapkan oleh Voltaire ialah filsafat hidup, sindiran, kritik bahkan serangan-serangan tajam yang dilancarkannya terhadap lawan-lawan atau gagasan-gagasan yang tidak disukainya, tidak selalu mudah ditangkap, yang kadang-kadang memberi kesan konyol dan tidak bernilai sastra.
