Em Surdus mundi: educação linguística de surdos no século XX, Pedro Henrique Witchs discute os modos pelos quais os surdos foram linguisticamente conduzidos. Compreendendo a surdez como uma matriz de experiência, o autor explora um conjunto de documentos mantidos pelo Acervo Histórico do Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos compreendidos no período entre 1909 e 1989. Com base nas noções foucaultianas de governamento e subjetivação, Witchs distinguiu duas caracterizações do comportamento linguístico das pessoas surdas: as condutas linguísticas almejadas e as condutas linguísticas abjetas. A partir delas, identificou o exercício do governamento linguístico distribuído em três composições da maquinaria escolar: um currículo que foca a educação linguística, a formação de professores especialistas no ensino para surdos e um conjunto de práticas pedagógicas direcionadas à aprendizagem da língua nacional. Desse modo, o autor argumenta que as práticas observadas operavam na produção de uma subjetividade surda com características universais, o Surdus mundi, que, embora possa falar uma língua de sinais e esteja orientado a uma tendência cosmopolita de ser surdo, abarca em si a potência de ser governado também pelo uso de línguas orais, ainda que em sua modalidade escrita. Trata-se de uma contribuição não apenas aos aspectos do governamento linguístico na educação de surdos, como também na educação de qualquer indivíduo, que permite o fomento de discussões nas áreas da Educação e da Linguística Aplicada.

A formação de professores que trabalham com o ensino de alunos surdos é um tema do nosso tempo. Pensando nessa questão, o presente livro objetiva problematizar modos de ser docente em escolas de surdos do sul do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), a partir de suas práticas matemáticas. A escrita desta obra se dá pelas mãos de uma professora que atua com alunos surdos desde 2010 e apresenta neste livro a suas experiências como professora de surdos. Assim, por meio de oficinas temáticas com professores de duas escolas de surdos do Sul do Rio Grande do Sul, inventa-se Dagmar, personagem conceitual e estético, que, no decorrer da trama, passa a dar vida aos modos de ser docente em Matemática com alunos surdos. Do escrutínio do material, formaram-se três subcomposições da personagem conceitual: na primeira, marcam-se as linhas duras de Dagmar, seu território, suas estrias oriundas da educação matemática, que marcam práticas na educação de surdos; na segunda, a gagueira, o que, na educação de surdos, faz desterritorializar a docência em Matemática; na terceira, apresenta-se o que do encontro da educação matemática com o menor, estamos produzindo na educação de surdos, isto é, a reterritorilização de Dagmar.
