Excerpt from A Treatise on Surgery, Vol. 1 In presenting a new work on Surgery the author has endeavored to bring together the most recent and improved methods of surgical practice, and, with the aid of numerous cross - references, to arrange these ina form readily available to the student and practitioner. As a necessary preliminary to this, the so - called art of surgery, the effort has been made to set forth the fundamental principles underlying what is known as the science of surgery in both an interesting and an instructive manner. The study of inflammation from the surgical viewpoint is based on the tissue changes that follow the infliction of wounds. Contrary to the usual custom the subject of Surgical Bacteriology is introduced in connection with the etiology of inflammation, in which it is an important factor. The grouping of the topics differs somewhat from the arrangement usually employed, as will be seen by reference to the table of contents. It is believed that the study of the subject will? Be facilitated by this method of classification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The First Lines of the Practice of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2: Designed as an Introduction for Students, and a Concise Book of Reference for Practitioners The favourable reception, which this publication has met with, has encouraged me to revise the present edition with particular care. Several of the chapters in it are entirely new, as will be immediately perceived, on comparing those on the diseases Of the eye and its appendages, with the ao count Of the same subjects in former editions. A chapter on amputation of the lower jaw is introduced; an Operation, of which I could find no satisfactory description in any general treatise on surgery, though its performance has now been repeatedly accomplished in France, America, Germany, and this kingdom, with a degree Of success, that affords a con vincing proof, in addition to many others, of the inestima ble value of Operative surgery, for the cure of the most in tractable diseases. I am perfectly aware, that every new Operation, upon its first introduction to the common notice of the profession, is liable to be occasionally practised under circumstances not absolutely requiring it. This sometimes happens from want Of discrimination, but still more fre quently, (i am ashamed to say, ) from the base motive of making the Operation itself a step to notoriety and unmerited reputation. Hence, I feel myself called upon to exhort the admirers of Operative surgery, and every practitioner inter ested in the credit and improvement Of his profession, never to suffer their love Of extraordinary feats with the knife, or their greedy desire Of fame, to make them forgetful of the. Excerpt from A Manual of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 3: General Surgery The object of this work is to give a succinct account of modern surgical pathology, diagnosis, and treatment, and it is intended as a manual for practitioners and students. Much of merely historical interest has been purposely omitted, partly on account of want of space, and partly because a repetition of what is already in print, but now out of date, is undesirable. In a work such as this it must necessarily happen that certain rare conditions can only be treated of brie y; but so far as possible, I have embodied the results of sixteen years' experience as a hospital surgeon and teacher. Excerpt from Surgery, Vol. 1: Its Principles and Practice My thanks are especially due to Professor J. Chalmers Da Costa, whose ripe surgical knowledge, advice, and practical aid have been and will continue to be of inestimable value. That the publishers have given generous help, this volume is the best evidence. They have cheerfully cooperated from the very first, and have spared no expense, especially in the many illustrations. The other four volumes will follow as rapidly as they can be printed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Surgery, Vol. 1 The great advances that have been made in recent years in our knowledge of the minute processes and tissue changes in disease, of the causes that underlie them, and of the principles of repair, have established the practice of surgery upon a much broader and more scientific foundation than it formerly had; and the surgeon of to-day who wishes his work to be thorough, intelligent, and fruitful of good results must make this knowledge all his own and must build upon this foundation. Nowhere is this need more keenly appreciated than in our medical schools, where it has long been recognised that the student must gain a thorough knowledge of surgical pathology before he can listen with advantage to didactic and clinical lectures upon special forms of surgical disease and injury. The makers of even the most recent surgical text-books in the English language have adhered, in the main, to the old division and arrangement of their subjects, and instead of adding to the general group of inflammations, surgical complications, and general surgical diseases, the kindred subjects of the general surgical injuries and diseases of the various tissues, they have separated the latter and combined them with the study of their numerous and varied local forms in regional surgery. Moreover, the general need of keeping the work within relatively narrow limits has led to a correspondingly concise and restricted presentation of the general pathology of each subject, one unsuited to the needs of both the beginner and the practitioner who is in search of detailed information. On the other hand, the Germans, and to some extent the French, have divided their text-books into two distinct parts, the "general" and the "special"; including in the former not only the general affections and pathology, but also the pathology and principles of treatment of the injuries and diseases of the various tissues, and confining the latter to the consideration of their local manifestations in regional surgery; and the space given to general surgery in their best-known text-books is nearly or quite equal to that given to both subjects in ours. Excerpt from Text-Book of Operative Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2 No apology is needed for the endeavour to render more accessible to the profession in this country a work on operative surgery by so eminent an authority as Professor Kocher. The book is essentially a record of the author's personal experience and of his own methods of operation. To avoid an appearance of egotism he has written in the first person plural, and this plan has been followed in the translation. The first English edition, which appeared in 1895, was translated from the second German edition, while the second English edition, which was twice the size of its predecessor, was translated from the fourth German edition. The present volume is a translation of the fifth and latest German edition. The amount of new material that has been added, the rearrangement and revision of the text, and the great number of new illustrations introduced have been responsible for an increase of 300 pages. The work now covers the whole field of operative surgery. In the first of the five parts into which the volume is divided, the preparation of the patient, the disinfection of the surgeon and his assistants, the methods of sterilisation, surgical technique, treatment of wounds and anæsthesia have been greatly amplified, local and regional anæsthesia being dealt with at length. In the second part the surgery of the vascular system has been systematically considered, no less than 106 operations on the arteries being described, while the suture of veins receives full attention. The third part, dealing with the surgery of the nervous system, has been rearranged as well as largely amplified. The portion devoted to the operations on the brain and cranial nerves has been practically rewritten, and full acknowledgment is given to the work of the present-day neurologists, especially in connection with the removal of tumours and of the Gasserian ganglion.
