New York Undercover written by Jennifer Fronc and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-15 with Social Science categories.

To combat behavior they viewed as sexually promiscuous, politically undesirable, or downright criminal, social activists in Progressive-era New York employed private investigators to uncover the roots of society’s problems. New York Undercover follows these investigators—often journalists or social workers with no training in surveillance—on their information-gathering visits to gambling parlors, brothels, and meetings of criminal gangs and radical political organizations. Drawing on the hundreds of detailed reports that resulted from these missions, Jennifer Fronc reconstructs the process by which organizations like the National Civic Federation and the Committee of Fourteen generated the knowledge they needed to change urban conditions. This information, Fronc demonstrates, eventually empowered government regulators in the Progressive era and beyond, strengthening a federal state that grew increasingly repressive in the interest of pursuing a national security agenda. Revealing the central role of undercover investigation in both social change and the constitution of political authority, New York Undercover narrates previously untold chapters in the history of vice and the emergence of the modern surveillance state.

Informants are an invaluable, often instrumental aspect of criminal investigations, but they do present certain management issues. In the necessarily clandestine world they inhabit, the imposition of institutional control presents unique challenges. Lack of training and communication among law enforcement professionals tend to ensure the same error

Regulating Undercover Law Enforcement The Australian Experience written by Brendon Murphy and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-05 with Law categories.

This book examines the way in which undercover police investigation has come to be regulated in Australia. Drawing on documentary and doctrinal legal analysis, this book investigates how, in the space of a single decade, Australian law makers set out to regulate one of the most difficult aspects of police: undercover investigation. In so doing, the Australian experience represents a paradigm model. And yet despite its success, it is a system of law and practice that has a dark side – a model of investigation to relies heavily on activities that are unlawful in the absence of authorisation. It is a model that is as much concerned with the surveillance and control of police as it is with suspected criminal conduct. The book aims to locate the Australian experience in comparative perspective with other major common law jurisdictions (the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand), with a view to contrast strengths, similarities and weaknesses of these models. It is argued that the Australian model, at the pragmatic level, offers a highly successful model for regulatory structure and practice, providing a significant model for successful regulation. At the same time, the model that has been introduced raises important questions about how and why the Australian experience evolved in the way that it did, and the implications this has for the relationship between citizen and state, the judiciary and the executive, and broader questions about the protections offered by rights discourse and jurisprudence. This book aims to document the law, policy and practices that shape undercover investigations. In so doing, it aims to not only articulate the way in which the law regulates these activities, but also to move on to consider some of the fundamental questions linked to undercover investigations: how did regulation happen? By what means of regulation? What are the driving policy issues that give this field of law its particular complexion? What are the implications? Who gains, and who loses, by which means of power? The book offers unique insights into a largely unknown aspect of modern covert policing, identifying a range of practices, the legal framework, controversies and powers. By locating these practices in a rich theoretical context, informed by risk and governmentality scholarship, this book offers a legal and theoretical explanation of one of the most controversial forms of policing.

Fundamentals Of Physical Surveillance written by Raymond P. Siljander and has been published by Charles C. Thomas Publisher this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Police patrol categories.

This introductory text covers the many fundamental topics involved with physical surveillance for uniformed and plainclothes law enforcement personnel. Physical surveillance is one of the most essential resources available to investigators and officers for detecting criminal activities and building a case against the suspected offenders. As such, it is important to build the skills necessary for observing criminal suspects while remaining undetected. The first chapter explains that physical surveillance is the 3direct observation of people, vehicles, or activity taking place at some given location for the purpose of obtaining information.4 According to the authors, physical surveillance remains more of an art form than a series of techniques; however, it is possible to offer guidance toward the successful completion of physical surveillance. As such, the authors offer instruction, in various chapters, on how to plan for a surveillance job as well as how to best carry out vehicle surveillance, foot surveillance, stationary surveillance, and undercover surveillance. Particular applications of surveillance are also discussed, including physical surveillance for private investigators and process servers, surveillance for drug investigations, night-time surveillance, and electronic surveillance. Other topics covered in the text are surveillance techniques for terrorism investigations and prostitution investigations. The authors offer a chapter on how to read the environment, including how to recognize and read environmental behavioral clues, neighborhood dynamics, and the routine behaviors of people and animals. Another chapter deals with the issue of vision and vision-aid equipment for surveillance officers. Similarly, the following chapter takes up the topic of surveillance photography and offers tips on types of cameras, video cameras, and film, as well as how to handle infrared photography. Final chapters offer tips for writing surveillance reports and the basics of the laws involving the use of physical and electronic surveillance. The authors caution that the techniques set forth in this text are best applied with variations that should be adapted to each individual setting of surveillance and the intended goal of the investigation.
