The influence of the molecular structure of air appearing at flight at high altitude and of dissociation occuring at high flight velocities have been discussed. From this discussion specifically as well as from the survey generally the regimes became apparent in which future research is of special engineering importance.

An experimental evaluation was made of the insulated-mass method of measuring heat transfer rates in air flows at supersonic speeds. This method consists of measuring the rate of change of temperature with time of an insulated mass of known heat capacity. Wind tunnel tests of a flat plate model at Mach Number 5.01 were made to determine the effect of several qualities of insulation. The tests indicated a strong influence of insulation on the results, but a suitable insulation was obtained and satisfactory heat transfer coefficients were obtained. A survey of heat transfer along the flat plate was made and the results are compared with turbulent flow theories. (Author).

Abstract: Many methods of cooling the structure of an aircraft capable of flight speeds up to 18,000 feet per second were studied. Water and hydrogen stored in the liquid state appear very promising as both coolants and heat sinks. The storage and circulation of hydrogen throughout the aircraft need not be a hazard. Cooling the outer skin of the aircraft in high-equilibrium-temperature regions could probably be avoided by using a material such as silicon carbide. The internal structure could be cooled by use of a thin layer of balsa wood saturated with water. In this way tanks for storage of coolant would be avoided.
