The critically acclaimed memoir from the well-loved broadcaster Gerry Anderson Gerry Anderson broadcast every day out of Londonderry, which once upon a time was called Doire Colmcille, evolving, under the influence of the English, into LondonDerry in the 17th century. On a dark night now, asked about your destination by a shadowy figure, 'Derry' might be the right answer or the wrong answer. 'Stroke City', on the other hand, addresses the issue with wry neutrality. Gerry Anderson was anything but neutral about his life, his country and his work. SURVIVING IN STROKE CITY is a sharp, evocative, often surreal meditation on a world that Anderson made uniquely his own.

In October 2016, Udo Kischka suffered a severe stroke. A large intra-cerebral bleed, a bleed deep in the right side of his brain. He was not a typical stroke patient: Professor Kischka was a neurologist and specialist in stroke rehabilitation. Like all stroke patients, he embarked on a journey of recovery. In his case, it was a re-education in his field of expertise. When he uttered the words, 'This is a life changing event' to his wife a few hours after the stroke, he had no idea just how life changing it would be or that there would be still be a good life to be had. Written by experts on both sides of the fence - a stroke victim who is a stroke specialist, and a psychologist who helps others and now has to help herself and her family - this is a personal and brutally honest story of a family's survival. This accessible and relatable book provides insight and realistic hope about what might lie ahead following a stroke, as well as offering both practical and emotional support.

Welcome to my book, this is my story and observations of when I suffered and survived a life threatening major stroke in my mid forties not so long ago. It is a 100% frank account with no elaboration. Those who know me will know and understand my turn of phrase anyway and hopefully this book sounds like me. The main reason for me writing this was during my recovery I was trying to get answers to my own personal questions which is very frustrating, VERY! I have written this in my own words exactly how it happened for me. so if you, the reader, can identify with a chapter, a paragraph or even a phrase, something that can lift you or take away some frustration that you will feel at some point, then this book has done its job. This is my story, events, opinions, observations and thoughts from having the stroke, through my early and ongoing recovery and finishes with my 10km run for the Stroke Association less than three years later.

The reasons for writing this book are manifold. For all stroke victims out there who are asking “why me?” I just want to say that you are not alone. If there is one thing I want to achieve through this book is to convey the message that even though a stroke can be debilitating but it is not the end of life. Do not ask yourself: Did I deserve a stroke? It is a fruitless question. One has to toughen up. Be optimistic. And do your best. Remember that there are people who are worse off than you, so be grateful for what you have. When I had my stroke, I thought that it was the end of my life. I could barely stand up straight and needed the help of three people to help me walk twenty feet! I was being fed through a feeding tube from my abdomen into the stomach. But I didn’t give up. With support from my wonderful family and friends, I worked very hard; took therapy; and stayed optimistic. If I can inspire even one person to not to give up hope and double their efforts, I have achieved my goal. I hope that this book serves a valuable tool to millions of stroke patients, their families, and friends, and brings back the joy in their life.

Nicolas Sully was a typical kid going to an inner-city school. Nearing the end of his 8th grade year, Nick s biggest concerns were football, friends and girls. Playing basketball one day in the school gym with his friends Nick gets a headache. Then his voice slurs. When he has difficulty putting on his shoes and vomits in front of Gym teacher, school personnel call the ambulance. Nobody that age expects a stroke - A stroke that will change how the world looks at him, and how he looks at himself. A stroke that will change his relationships with friends, family and all of those people that make up his world. Nick speaks his mind, with raw, and at times explicit depictions, of an inner-city coming-of-age experience. An experience made more challenging by his stroke. Nick deals with the transitions of school, relationships, and youth to manhood, all the while trying to control the emotional roller-coaster ride of a teenage stroke victim. Author Bio: Nicolas Sully had the average child s raising, in Brooklyn, NY, where he was born. After eighth grade, the world turned upside down for the young man. Surviving a stroke he suffered in class one spring day, bitterness set in and malicious relationships began to crumble. Over the course of his high school career, he moved from his hometown to Long Island, where he graduated from Elmont Memorial High School with plenty of college awards and recommendations to his name. He is currently in college, working his way into a medical and health profession. For this young man, the sky is the limit. keywords: Stroke, Youth, Coming of Age, New York, High School, Inner-City, Relationships"
