From the beginning I always felt I didn’t belong. My own parents didn’t raise me, I felt unloved, unwanted, like it was my fault, the physical abuse, the sexual abuse, I thought everything was my fault, I didn’t feel worthy of love and I took that feeling into a 25 year marriage that ended in divorce. I still felt broken & unworthy of love, but the one thing I did promise myself was that when I had kids of my own they would never experienced what I went through. I had to be the one that broke a vicious cycle and I did it. Life’s began to look up for me, when I met my future husband on a blind date. Everything was so wonderful until March 7, 2014 when my world exploded into madness, my youngest son 35 was killed. My perfect world had fallen apart. I asked God “why him, why now?” Read how I found the resiliency to go on, I was heartbroken, how was I suppose to go on? How does any parent who loses a child move forward? I was much stronger than I ever thought I could be, but I survived and so can you.

Surviving the Storm presents a humanistic psychological perspective on how to support cancer survivors by offering an individualized narrative structure designed to help them tell their stories. This is a book for people who need to tell the story of how they've been touched by cancer. It doesn't tell what to eat, or how much to exercise, or what to think and feel. Instead, it introduces a contemplative perspective and gives readers a pragmatic structure to help them tell their unique story of surviving or living with cancer. It helps them discover their authentic voice, giving them a way to speak in their own words. Workbook sections are the core of this book and offer a narrative structure created for patients, partners, families, and friends with an emphasis on the different needs and questions of each group. This book focuses on the whole person, their potential, and their natural drive toward authenticity. A contemplative perspective emphasizes shared human needs such as love, belonging, and personal meaning, and expands beyond the learning-based behavioral and psychosocial resources that are currently available to cancer patients and their families. The book provides options that differ from the support group and medical models of treatment, opening up an alternative to the mode of managing or tolerating the issues of cancer into the realm of awareness, exploration, acceptance, and transformation. While it is tempting to find solutions and try to" there is much to be gained from learning how to live with uncertainty and from delving more deeply into the emotional residue of cancer. Included are definitions of the different phases of cancer survivorship, material that gives survivors a viewpoint that normalizes the challenges they face, and current research and literature. Personal stories of cancer survivors are highlighted, and poetry and writings related to cancer are interspersed throughout the book to make it more personal.

No electricity. No communication. No way to escape the storm raging on the horizon. The search for somewhere to belong leads two strangers, Jacob and Mati, to a secluded Ontario community as its residents encounter unthinkable tragedy. In the shadows, Alex faces the end of the world head on, and forges a new way forward. As the sickness spreads, they confront the harsh reality of what it will take to survive, and how the repercussions will forever change them. In the second installment of the series, Surviving the Storm explores how adversity can unite us, but also tear us apart, and proves that surviving alone does not mean you are immune from the effects of the storm.

Try it. Right now. Picture the lights going off in the room you're sitting in. The computer, the air conditioning, phones, everything. Then the people, every last person in your building, on the street outside, the entire neighborhood, vanished. With them go all noises: chitchat, coughs, cars, and that wordless, almost impalpable hum of a city. And animals: no dogs, no birds, not even a cricket's legs rubbing together, not even a smell. Now bump it up to 95 degrees. Turn your radio on and listen to 80 percent of your city drowning. You're almost there. Only twenty-eight days to go. Joshua Clark never left New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, choosing instead to band together with fellow holdouts in the French Quarter, pooling resources and volunteering energy in an effort to save the city they loved. When Katrina hit, Clark, a key correspondent for National Public Radio during the storm, immediately began to record hundreds of hours of conversations with its victims, not only in the city but throughout the Gulf: the devastated poor and rich alike; rescue workers from around the country; reporters; local characters who could exist nowhere else but New Orleans; politicians; the woman Clark loved, in a relationship ravaged by the storm. Their voices resound throughout this memoir of a unique and little-known moment of anarchy and chaos, of heartbreaking kindness and incomprehensible anguish, of mercy and madness as only America could deliver it. Paying homage to the emotional power of Joan Didion, the journalistic authority of Norman Mailer, and the gonzo irreverence of Tom Wolfe, Joshua Clark takes us through the experiences of loss and renewal, resilience and hope, in a city unlike any other. With lyrical sympathy, humility, and humor, Heart Like Water marks an astonishing and important national debut. A portion of the author's royalties from this book will go to the Katrina Arts Relief and Emergency Support (KARES) fund, which supports New Orleans-area writers affected by the storm.Visit www.NewOrleansLiteraryInstitute.com to find out how to make a direct and positive impact on the region.
