Kim Yong shares his harrowing account of life in a labor camp a singularly despairing form of torture carried out by the secret state. Although it is known that gulags exist in North Korea, little information is available about their organization and conduct, for prisoners rarely escape both incarceration and the country alive. Long Road Home shares the remarkable story of one such survivor, a former military official who spent six years in a gulag and experienced firsthand the brutality of an unconscionable regime. As a lieutenant colonel in the North Korean army, Kim Yong enjoyed unprecedented privilege in a society that closely monitored its citizens. He owned an imported car and drove it freely throughout the country. He also encountered corruption at all levels, whether among party officials or Japanese trade partners, and took note of the illicit benefits that were awarded to some and cruelly denied to others. When accusations of treason stripped Kim Yong of his position, the loose distinction between those who prosper and those who suffer under Kim Jong-il became painfully clear. Kim Yong was thrown into a world of violence and terror, condemned to camp No. 14 in Hamkyeong province, North Korea's most notorious labor camp. As he worked a constant shift 2,400 feet underground, daylight became Kim's new luxury; as the months wore on, he became intimately acquainted with political prisoners, subhuman camp guards, and an apocalyptic famine that killed millions. After years of meticulous planning, and with the help of old friends, Kim escaped and came to the United States via China, Mongolia, and South Korea. Presented here for the first time in its entirety, his story not only testifies to the atrocities being committed behind North Korea's wall of silence but also illuminates the daily struggle to maintain dignity and integrity in the face of unbelievable hardship. Like the work of Solzhenitsyn, this rare portrait tells a story of resilience as it reveals the dark forms of oppression, torture, and ideological terror at work in our world today.

The author intended initially to present a brief summary of events in his personal life. However, as he wrote he realized he could not ignore major national and international events which had an impact on his country, his family, and his life. WWII, and the imposition and affects of Communism on the population of Eastern and Central Europe, figures prominently into this captivating memoir. "We survived the bombing raids in 1943 and 1944. Some of the bombs fell not far from our house and scared the hell out of everybody. We were all hiding in the basement with concrete walls but we experienced some scary moments. People started screaming when they heard the whistling sound of the bombs. I thought this was the end of our lives. The house trembled when the bombs exploded nearby. We survived but it was a close call. At the end of the scare, I walked out of the basement and took a look around. Houses in the vicinity, hit by the bombs, were fully destroyed and I noticed a lot of bloodstains in the ruins. It was a horrible sight. I thought of the bodies of the dead people lying under the ruins. I will never forget the scene I observed." "In those moments of emotional excitement and despair, I wondered: why do people have to fight wars and kill each other? Why can't they resolve their conflicts peacefully, by negotiating?"

A heart-wrenching true story of one young man's journey into, through, and out of the Holocaust. Some people have a knack for survival, for getting out of jams. Twelve-year-old David Karmi found himself face to face with the ultimate test. With his homeland consumed by fear, David entered a world of human slaughter. Whole towns were vaporized. Cities obliterated in firestorms. More than fifty million people died—twelve million either gassed, shot, hanged, worked to death or subjected to biological experiments. David survived. Separated from his parents and siblings, David Karmi was hurled into a nightmare of death camps, forced marches, sickness, violence and depravity. On his own, through the tortuous months that followed, he endured. He is a survivor of Auschwitz, Dachau, and the Warsaw Ghetto. He enured forced marches, starvation, and even persecution after the Allies freed him from the camps. This is a story of strength, courage, some luck - and an amazing man, told in his own words. It is the biography of a survivor. PRAISE FOR SURVIVOR's GAME: “[Karmi’s debut forgoes] the despair employed by Primo Levi and Elie Wiesel, instead echoing the optimism of Anne Frank…Eminently readable and largely remarkable.” —Kirkus Reviews "‘Some people have a knack for survival, for getting out of jams.’ Karmi is one of those, and he faces the ultimate test as a young teen in Nazi-occupied Europe as he and his family are deported to Auschwitz." —Publishers Weekly "Survivor’s Game reads not so much like a memoir but a novel, replete with tension, drama, and twists and turns. Recommended." —Midwest Book Review "This is a story we all need to know…the cost of forgetting is too high." —New York Times best-selling author Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff

A forgotten account, written in the immediate aftermath of World War II, which vividly portrays the valor, sacrifice, suffering, and liberation of the defenders of Bataan and Corregidor through the eyes of one survivor. The personal memoir of Colonel David L. Hardee, first drafted at sea from April-May 1945 following his liberation from Japanese captivity, is a thorough treatment of his time in the Philippines. A career infantry officer, Hardee fought during the Battle of Bataan as executive officer of the Provisional Air Corps Regiment. Captured in April 1942 after the American surrender on Bataan, Hardee survived the Bataan Death March and proceeded to endure a series of squalid prison camps. A debilitating hernia left Hardee too ill to travel to Japan in 1944, making him one of the few lieutenant colonels to remain in the Philippines and subsequently survive the war. As a primary account written almost immediately after his liberation, Hardee’s memoir is fresh, vivid, and devoid of decades of faded memories or contemporary influences associated with memoirs written years after an experience. This once-forgotten memoir has been carefully edited, illustrated and annotated to unlock the true depths of Hardee’s experience as a soldier, prisoner, and liberated survivor of the Pacific War.
