How can human communities sustain a long-term existence on a small planet? This challenge grows ever more urgent as the threat of global warming increases. Planning for Sustainability presents a wide-ranging, intellectually well-grounded and accessible introduction to the concept of planning for more sustainable and livable communities. The text explores topics such as how more compact and walkable cities and towns might be created, how local ecosystems can be restored, how social inequalities might be reduced, how greenhouse gas emissions might be lowered, and how more sustainable forms of economic development can be brought about. The second edition has been extensively revised and updated throughout, including an improved structure with chapters now organized under three sections: the nature of sustainable planning, issues central to sustainable planning, and scales of sustainable planning. New material includes greater discussion of climate change, urban food systems, the relationships between public health and the urban environment, and international development. Building on past schools of planning theory, Planning for Sustainability lays out a sustainability planning framework that pays special attention to the rapidly evolving institutions and power structures of a globalizing world. By considering in turn each scale of planning—international, national, regional, municipal, neighborhood, and site and building—the book illustrates how sustainability initiatives at different levels can interrelate. Only by weaving together planning initiatives and institutions at different scales, and by integrating efforts across disciplines, can we move towards long-term human and ecological well-being.

Livability And Sustainability Of Urbanism written by Bagoes Wiryomartono and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-09 with Science categories.

This book is a fascinating, wide-reaching interdisciplinary examination of urbanism in the context of humanities and social sciences research, comprising cutting-edge theoretical and empirical investigations of urban livability and sustainability. Urban livability is explored as a phenomenon of happenings that gather people, things, and domains in the specific spatiotemporal context of the city; this context is the life-world of urbanism. Meanwhile, sustainability is conceived of as the capacity of urbanism that enables people to cultivate their sociocultural and economic existence and development without the depletion of their current resources in the future. In this study, phenomenology is uniquely incorporated as a way of seeing things according to their presence in space and time.

This ambitious text is a monograph about human experiences concerning the potentialities, capacities, and features of humankind from the wholeness of the collective mind body spirit. The purpose in reframing human endeavors is for enhanced alignment for livability and sustainability. This book departs from the concept and practice of “design and technology” and argues that most crises that endanger and destruct our ecological livability and sustainability come from our way of thinking and doing with “design and technology” based on the necessity for control. It is the control for overcoming the fear of scarcity, starvation, and the unknown. This book is rather an attempt to find alternate way of decision-making thru holistic methods. It appeals to researchers working in design, sustainability, architecture and urban studies.

The promotion of sustainable urban development and livable cities in the past three decades has effectively merged the themes of urban health, urban sustainability, and urban livability into an integrated research field. As more people are predicted to live in a relatively confined space, the balance between the physical/built environment, social environment, and urban dwellers becomes more delicate. Urban systems have evolved to be more complex than ever during this process. While complex systems often offer relative stability, delicate balance requires carefully designed plans and management to avoid collapse. It is, hence, of great interest and importance to know what future sustainable and livable cities look like. Intersecting Health, Livability, and Human Behavior in Urban Environments considers how to improve the quality of the environment and healthy living in contemporary and future urban environments. Covering key topics such as environmental health, smart cities, and urban health, this premier reference source is ideal for policymakers, government officials, scholars, researchers, academicians, instructors, and students.

This century of growth has been fed by equally unprecedented material resource consumption and associated negative environmental impacts. This book offers both a vision and a path to a sustainable future while maintaining a livable world. Sustainability is a human concern, and sustainable development cannot occur without human development. This collection of essays introduces the human dimension into the sustainability debate by applying what we call the golden rule of sustainability: "Do unto future generations as you would have had previous ones do unto yours." Guided by this ethical imperative and by harnessing the power of science in both the physical and human worlds, we have can remake national and global institutions in ways that offer real hope for future generations.

Featuring elegant photographs, this sustainable architecture and design book showcases the ultra-modern homes of Singapore. Singapore is celebrated as one of the most livable cities in Asia, and Sustainable Luxury shows how the prosperous, forward-looking nation is pioneering innovative solutions for environmental, economic, social, and cultural issues faced the world over. Dr. Paul McGillick, the author of The Sustainable Asian House (Tuttle, 2013), presents twenty-seven recent residential projects created by Singapore's most talented architects to address the many complex and interconnected aspects of sustainability. Some of the homes featured here emphasize environmental needs, while others are concerned with preserving cultural traditions or supporting societal and interpersonal needs—such as extended family dwellings. Each residence, however, exhibits solutions developed from a holistic point of view. These homes typically embrace the tropical climate rather than fight it, and illustrate how smart manipulation of air flows, light, shade, water, and landscaping sustain higher levels of comfort without resorting to air-conditioning. In addition to profiling individual residences, Sustainable Luxury looks at the big picture, canvassing the most pressing issues—including changing demographics and lifestyles—and examining the available solutions. Anyone concerned with the future of our world will be fascinated by the houses presented here and the ways in which Singapore is leading the way in the development of residential architecture that is as luxurious as it is sustainable.

Many observers have noted that we have much talk about urban sustainability in Canada, but few examples of sustainable development exist on the ground. The reasons for this are complex, but one reason that is often put forward is that we lack a system of criteria to define what a sustainable project would look like, how it would function, and what impacts it would have on key parameters. This limits the ability of sustainability advocates in the community, on council, municipal staff or within the development industry to articulate an alternative to existing development practices and designs or to objectively evaluate proposals being put forward under the rubric of sustainability. This study serves as the first phase of a larger project that is intended to create a sustainable subdivision evaluation system (SSES). Such a system would provide a method or model that planning practitioners, developers and other stakeholders in communities across Canada could use to assess subdivision plans for their livability and sustainability features. The current report is focused on describing the state of the art in evaluating subdivision plans from a livability and sustainability perspective and making recommendations for proceeding with the next stages of the overall project.
