This special topical volume on ‘Sustainable Building Materials and Materials for Energy Efficiency’ is aimed to cover the recent advancements and trends in the area of building materials with reference to energy efficiency and sustainability. Sustainable building materials minimizes the consumption of earth’s resources and help in maintaining the ecosystem balance and in return proves to be economical, not just during construction but also year after year. Using sustainable building materials promotes conservation of dwindling nonrenewable resources internationally. Integrating sustainable and energy efficient building materials into building projects can help reduce the environmental impacts associated with the extraction, transportation, processing, fabrication, installation, reuse, recycling, and disposal of these building industry source materials. The volume will be of special interest to environmentally-minded producers and suppliers of building materials and to engineers, architects and building workers, but it may also be of use to readers and researchers who are interested in building construction but who lack specialist technical knowledge.

Materials For Energy Efficiency And Thermal Comfort In Buildings written by Matthew R Hall and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-21 with Architecture categories.

Almost half of the total energy produced in the developed world is inefficiently used to heat, cool, ventilate and control humidity in buildings, to meet the increasingly high thermal comfort levels demanded by occupants. The utilisation of advanced materials and passive technologies in buildings would substantially reduce the energy demand and improve the environmental impact and carbon footprint of building stock worldwide. Materials for energy efficiency and thermal comfort in buildings critically reviews the advanced building materials applicable for improving the built environment. Part one reviews both fundamental building physics and occupant comfort in buildings, from heat and mass transport, hygrothermal behaviour, and ventilation, on to thermal comfort and health and safety requirements. Part two details the development of advanced materials and sustainable technologies for application in buildings, beginning with a review of lifecycle assessment and environmental profiling of materials. The section moves on to review thermal insulation materials, materials for heat and moisture control, and heat energy storage and passive cooling technologies. Part two concludes with coverage of modern methods of construction, roofing design and technology, and benchmarking of façades for optimised building thermal performance. Finally, Part three reviews the application of advanced materials, design and technologies in a range of existing and new building types, including domestic, commercial and high-performance buildings, and buildings in hot and tropical climates. This book is of particular use to, mechanical, electrical and HVAC engineers, architects and low-energy building practitioners worldwide, as well as to academics and researchers in the fields of building physics, civil and building engineering, and materials science. Explores improving energy efficiency and thermal comfort through material selection and sustainable technologies Documents the development of advanced materials and sustainable technologies for applications in building design and construction Examines fundamental building physics and occupant comfort in buildings featuring heat and mass transport, hygrothermal behaviour and ventilation

“Choices we have and choices we make”. Selection of sustainable materials for building envelope can be a challenging task in designing green buildings keeping in view broad spectrum of factors governing their use such as availability materials in local proximity, embodied energy, life cycle cost over its operating phase, limiting cost factors, carbon footprint, strength, durability, recyclability, fire resistance or aesthetics etc. Energy conservation building code 2017 has brought out different metrics for building materials prescriptive requirements for ECBC, ECBC plus and super ECBC compliant buildings. Despite various research and development organizations, innovative use of building materials in building fabric have not taken off whereas selection and use of materials is very intrinsic to energy efficiency and green building practices. Use of proliferating glass even in residential buildings, external wall materials without any additional insulation, single paned glazed windows or poor air sealing are omnipresent. Deeper understanding of building physics and material properties is required to control building heat gain factor both from transparent fenestrations and opaque elements. The research paper attempts to draws inventory of materials and technologies for energy efficiency for reducing cooling loads of buildings for new as well as existing buildings.
