Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Energy Sciences, grade: 1.7, University of Applied Sciences Berlin (Engineering), course: Sustainable Development, language: English, abstract: Electricity is an important feature for economic development. The necessity lies in the fact that electricity affects every aspect of our economy. Nigeria should aim towards sustainable electricity access to its citizens. Nigeria must have a stable electrical energy supply to meet the market, basic needs of the people. A nation whose energy supply is not reliable does not help in the development of the national economy. Nigeria is a nation with more than 162 million inhabitants with less electric access to both rural and urban areas. This study has reviewed and analyzed the challenges and opportunities facing Electricity Access in Nigeria. The study has employed approach to good features of sustainable development system in the Nigerian electrical energy sector by proposing a sustainable strategies and alternatives for energy access through the use of solar power, wind and hydro power, and Bio-mass . Also, the study clearly explained and analyzed the problems facing the electricity in Nigeria. Thus, this study has used literature review methods, to gather information’s on Energy Sector in general and existing literatures on the Nigeria Energy Sector as well as a SWOT/PEST Matrix of the Nigerian Energy sector.

We are more aware of the need to achieve sustainable development than ever before. It is fair to say that two of the most important factors affecting sustainability are the ways of both producing and using energy. In this sense, this book provides a forum to articulate and discuss energy management issues in the frame of achieving sustainable development. And undoubtedly, we are also deeply concerned about these issues in the recent times. This volume contains 6 chapters and is organized into three sections: "Policies and Strategies", and "Technologies and Industries".

In this book, a number of long-term energy scenarios are developed for Nigeria considering the impact of vital factors that may influence energy policies in the country’s future energy system. The energy scenarios were developed through the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model. The model identified the future energy demand and supply pattern using a least-cost combination of technology options while limiting the emission of greenhouse gases. The book presents four scenarios, and key parameters considered include GDP, households, population, urbanization and the growth rates of energy-intensive sectors. Further, it highlights the findings of the cost-benefit analysis, which reveal the costs of implementing selected policies and strategies in Nigeria, including those focusing on energy efficiency and fuel/technology switching. The book also discusses the application of the LEAP-OSeMOSYS Model in order to identify lowest-cost power plants for electricity generation. Some sustainable strategies that can ensure a low carbon development in Nigeria are also explored on the basis of successful country cases in relation to the Nigerian LEAP model. As such, the book will help policy makers devise energy and sustainable strategies to achieve low carbon development in Nigeria.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are an ambitious agenda for environmental sustainability, economic development, and social transformation. The SDGs include targets for governments, in partnership with private industry and communities, to improve access to affordable and reliable energy, reduce inequality, protect natural resources, and invest in transparent legal institutions and resilient infrastructure. Although transitioning energy systems towards a low-carbon future is a core aspect of the SDGs, the International Energy Agency anticipates that oil and gas will remain a significant component of the global energy mix for some time. Host Government Instruments are tools which governments use to grant oil and gas companies permission to develop state-owned resources. In addition to bringing substantial resources into governments, these HGIs often also include environmental commitments as well as commitments to local hiring, stakeholder engagement, and investment in economic development programmes. The different structures of HGIs and their precise terms and conditions are crucial determinants of the sustainability of oil and gas operations conducted thereunder. This book addresses how governments can use HGIs to advance the SDGs. Part I introduces the SDGs and the legal institutions and governance related to HGIs, including in relation to international energy development, international environmental treaties, the Paris Agreement, and human rights regimes. Part II examines specific provisions within HGIs and regulatory systems which relate to the oil and gas sector and SDGs. It provides case studies to illustrate approaches to HGIs and to identify opportunities for host governments and international oil and gas companies to advance the SDGs. The book concludes with a summary of recommendations regarding how host governments, in partnership with the oil and gas industry, can use HGIs to advance economic development and sustainability goals, and advances potential insights towards development of new and renewable resources.

The oil and gas industry is a complex sector with significant reach in terms of providing the energy needs of the global economy and the security, environmental and development consequences thereof. In particular, the sector is extremely important for the economic growth of emerging markets and developing countries. Furthermore, the life span of oil and gas resources is finite, with high health and safety risks and substantial environmental costs that require careful management and sustainability practices to ensure optimal extraction and utilisation of these resources. This book examines the challenges and opportunities in the oil and gas industry, in the context of emerging markets and developing economies. It provides comprehensive coverage of the management and sustainability practices of the sector, the environmental impact and sustainability of resources as well as the businesses that operate in the sector across the entire value chain. It addresses the current discourse on topics such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the Green Economy, the Paris Agreement and Glasgow Climate Pact and concludes with a chapter on the future of the oil and gas industry. The discussions around energy and energy transitions in particular continue to gain momentum and the book provides a wide-reaching and up-to-date overview of the industry. The book introduces readers to the concepts and formal models of analysis in the oil and gas sector and will serve as a useful resource for students, scholars and researchers in operations, marketing, procurement and supply chain management, project management, health and safety management, environmental economics, natural resource economics, development finance, and development studies. Researchers and practitioners working in these areas will also find the book a useful reference material.

This book provides an insight into the complexities of weaning Nigeria from its fossil fuels addiction while growing the economy on low carbon trajectory. Nigeria faces a carbon catch 22 with the proliferation of renewable energy alternatives and scale-up of electric vehicles. The dilemma Nigeria is confronted with is to grow its fossil-led economy or face the challenge of its fossil infrastructure becoming stranded assets. It is a roadmap for plotting an environmentally benign path out of the country’s economic, social and environmental crises. This book is, therefore, a valuable resource for students, Civil Society Organizations, policymakers, academics and climate change adaptation practitioners who are interested in finding an environmentally sensitive path out of Nigeria’s economic cul-de-sac fostered by the decarbonization of the global energy economy. Findings of this study will trigger a national conversation on the looming exit from fossil fuels. In doing so, accelerate the integration of renewable energy into the Nigerian national development plan while building a carbon neutral society. Lessons learnt from the handling of Nigeria’s precarious circumstance will be of immense benefit to other oil prospecting, oil producing and non-producing nations who are interested in finding an equitable way of pursuing two inversely related goals of meeting their decarbonization commitments while simultaneously growing their economies in the post-Paris era.

This review examines the potentials of renewable energy resources in Nigeria which is aimed at reducing dependence on the carbon-based energy sources. The theoretical and technical potentials of renewable energy resources (solar radiation, biogas, wind, and hydropower energy) indicated that Nigeria has strong potential of meeting energy demand for agricultural, domestic and industrial without relying on fossil fuel. An average daily solar radiation (Rs) and wind energy of 12.1MJ/m2 to 28.5 MJ/m2, 3.3 m/s to 7.0 m/s in the coastal to the northern part of the country could generate 427,000MW, hydropower, biogas and wind energy were estimated to have energy potentials of 11,000MW and 6.6 million (m3) of biogas daily. The CO2 emits from renewable energy source is very low when compared with the conventional energy source and this makes it to be environmentally and human friendly. The current energy stress in Nigeria can be improved by formulating robust energy-based policies and researches capable of achieving some level of renewable energy development. Thus, strong internship between the developed world where lot of discoveries and breakthrough had made on the subject matter and developing is greatly encouraged.
