Nigeria must have a stable electrical energy supply to meet the market, basic needs of the people. A nation whose energy supply is not reliable does not help in the development of the national economy. Nigeria is a nation with more than 162 million inhabitants with less electric access to both rural and urban areas. This study has reviewed and analyzed the challenges and opportunities facing Electricity Access in Nigeria. The study has employed approach to good features of sustainable development system in the Nigerian electrical energy sector by proposing a sustainable strategies and alternatives for energy access through the use of solar power, wind and hydro power, and Bio-mass . Also, the study clearly explained and analyzed the problems facing the electricity in Nigeria. Thus, this study has used literature review methods, to gather information’s on Energy Sector in general and existing literatures on the Nigeria Energy Sector as well as a SWOT/PEST Matrix of the Nigerian Energy sector.

In this book, a number of long-term energy scenarios are developed for Nigeria considering the impact of vital factors that may influence energy policies in the country’s future energy system. The energy scenarios were developed through the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model. The model identified the future energy demand and supply pattern using a least-cost combination of technology options while limiting the emission of greenhouse gases. The book presents four scenarios, and key parameters considered include GDP, households, population, urbanization and the growth rates of energy-intensive sectors. Further, it highlights the findings of the cost-benefit analysis, which reveal the costs of implementing selected policies and strategies in Nigeria, including those focusing on energy efficiency and fuel/technology switching. The book also discusses the application of the LEAP-OSeMOSYS Model in order to identify lowest-cost power plants for electricity generation. Some sustainable strategies that can ensure a low carbon development in Nigeria are also explored on the basis of successful country cases in relation to the Nigerian LEAP model. As such, the book will help policy makers devise energy and sustainable strategies to achieve low carbon development in Nigeria.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are an ambitious agenda for environmental sustainability, economic development, and social transformation. Host Government Instruments are tools which governments use to grant oil and gas companies permission to develop state-owned resources. In addition to bringing substantial resources into governments, these HGIs often also include environmental commitments as well as commitments to local hiring, stakeholder engagement, and investment in economic development programmes. The different structures of HGIs and their precise terms and conditions are crucial determinants of the sustainability of oil and gas operations conducted thereunder. This book addresses how governments can use HGIs to advance the SDGs. Part I introduces the SDGs and the legal institutions and governance related to HGIs, including in relation to international energy development, international environmental treaties, the Paris Agreement, and human rights regimes. Part II examines specific provisions within HGIs and regulatory systems which relate to the oil and gas sector and SDGs. This review examines the potentials of renewable energy resources in Nigeria which is aimed at reducing dependence on the carbon-based energy sources. The theoretical and technical potentials of renewable energy resources (solar radiation, biogas, wind, and hydropower energy) indicated that Nigeria has strong potential of meeting energy demand for agricultural, domestic and industrial without relying on fossil fuel. An average daily solar radiation (Rs) and wind energy of 12.1MJ/m2 to 28.5 MJ/m2, 3.3 m/s to 7.0 m/s in the coastal to the northern part of the country could generate 427,000MW, hydropower, biogas and wind energy were estimated to have energy potentials of 11,000MW and 6.6 million (m3) of biogas daily. The CO2 emits from renewable energy source is very low when compared with the conventional energy source and this makes it to be environmentally and human friendly. The current energy stress in Nigeria can be improved by formulating robust energy-based policies and researches capable of achieving some level of renewable energy development. Thus, strong internship between the developed world where lot of discoveries and breakthrough had made on the subject matter and developing is greatly encouraged.
