Excerpt from Svensk Diktning, Vol. 2: Selections From Swedish Poets With Brief Monographies, Notes and Vocabulary Bernhard Elis Malmstrom foddes i Narke ar 1816. Vid Uppsala universitet studerade han forst till prast, men de humanistiska studierna, sarskilt historia, filosofi och Greklands klassiska litteratur, lade snart beslag pa hans intresse. Efter avlagd filosofie doktorsgrad blev han docent i astetik och slutligen, efter lang vantan, ar 1859 professor i astetik, litteratur - och konsthistoria. Han framtradde tidigt som skald och vann livligt bifall - blott 34 ar gammal invaldes han i svenska akademien. Men denna vackra, loftesrika var foljdes ej av nagon rik sommar. I slutet av 1840-talet forstummades hans sang nastan helt och hallet; blott undantagsvis ljod den Vid nagon vans eller larares grav. Men fran hans lyra ha klingat nagra av de mest smekande, smaltande toner, som ljudit i svensk sang. Det ar dock ej alltid, innehallet mot- svarar den betagande vackra formen; hans kanske mest beromda dikt "Angelika" ar i sitt musilcaliska valljud vacker som sommarvindens sus i grantopparna och - lika enformigt trottande i sin innehallsloshet. Men Mailmstrom hor alltjamt till Sverges mest folkkara och helst lasta skalder, och varhelst svensk tunga ljuder, skall helt sakert hans "Vi suckar det sa tungt uti skogen?" aldrig forlora sin formaga att smeka orat och rora sinnet. Sluten till lynnet och svartillganglig, levde Malmstrom i ensamhet och tillbakadragenhet ett foga lyckligt liv, alltmera frammande for den ungdom, vars uppburne talman han en gang varit och for vilken hans hjarta alltjamt klappade varmt bakom det slutna ska1et. - Efter blott nagra dagars sjukdom avled han ar 1865.
