Of the post-war, post-serialist generation of European composers, it was Luigi Nono who succeeded not only in identifying and addressing aesthetic and technical questions of his time, but in showing a way ahead to a new condition of music in the twenty-first century. His music has found a listenership beyond the ageing constituency of ‘contemporary music’. In Nono’s work, the audiences of sound art, improvisation, electronic, experimental and radical musics of many kinds find common cause with those concerned with the renewal of Western art music. His work explores the individually and socially transformative role of music; its relationship with history and with language; the nature of the musical work as distributed through text, time, technology and individuals; the nature and performativity of the act of composition; and, above all, the role and nature of listening as a cultural activity. In many respects his music anticipates the new technological state of culture of the twenty-first century while radically reconnecting with our past. Il libro rilegge, dal punto di vista delle poetiche della luce, alcune importanti vicende della messinscena teatrale occidentale del Novecento, dai grandi riformatori di inizio secolo fino ad artisti contemporanei quali Josef Svoboda, Alwin Nikolais, Robert Wilson. Non per delineare una storia in qualche misura organica della luce teatrale, ma per tentare di individuare, riguardo al suo uso, delle questioni di base. Le problematiche della luce vengono liberate dai contesti circoscritti della tecnica e dell’immagine nei quali restrittivamente finiscono spesso per venir relegate, ed indagate in ambiti come quelli della struttura spazio-temporale dello spettacolo, della costruzione drammatica, della creazione poetica, dell’azione, del rapporto con il performer. Una parte dedicata al lavoro teatrale dell’autore documenta il punto di vista peculiare che sta alla base del volume, interno ai processi creativi e al rapporto operativo con la tecnica. Il titolo “luce attiva” è un riferimento diretto ad Adolphe Appia, che alla fine dell’Ottocento fu tra i primi ad affrontare in maniera precisa – con i propri scritti e con le proprie creazioni – la questione della luce quale questione artistica del teatro. Per Appia lumière active era la luce scenica “propriamente detta”: luce espressiva e creatrice di forme; luce come materia poetica e sostanza drammatica.

L'obiettivo di questa ricerca è quello di esaminare il vídeo mapping, conosciuto anche come proiezione mappata o semplicemente mapping, nel contesto odierno. Questa tecnica consiste nel proiettare un video facendolo coincidere con la geometria di una realtà fisica ossia trasformando l'identità di una superficie in uno schermo multimediale dotato di nuove proprietà. Questa tecnica è molto versatile adattandosi perfettamente a diversi campi quali la scenografia, la video arte, la video cultura, le installazioni o proiezioni sui monumenti, sugli edifici e sulle strutture. Ha la capacità di ricreare un ambiente immersivo e, allo stesso tempo, sinestesico. Questa indagine riflette, contestualizza e studia il concetto di virtuale e il rapporto coi nuovi media, le sue origini e il suo utilizzo come mezzo nell'ambito dell'attivismo politico e sociale. Per comprenderlo meglio, sotto questa prospettiva, è stato analizzato il pensiero ed alcune opere chiavi dell'artista polacco Krzysztof Wodiczko.

Beginning from the unlikely vantage point of Venice in the aftermath of fascism and World War II, this book explores operatic production in the city's nascent postwar culture as a lens onto the relationship between opera and politics in the twentieth century. Both opera and Venice in the middle of the century are often talked about in strikingly similar terms: as museums locked in the past and blind to the future. These clichés are here overturned: perceptions of crisis were in fact remarkably productive for opera, and despite being physically locked in the past, Venice was undergoing a flourishing of avant-garde activity. Focusing on a local musical culture, Harriet Boyd-Bennett recasts some of the major composers, works, stylistic categories and narratives of twentieth-century music. The study provides fresh understandings of works by composers as diverse as Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Verdi, Britten and Nono.
