Are you brave? When the mysterious Amelia Pigeon turns up at Kirby's bedroom window in the dead of night, this is the question she asks him – immediately before they tumble into a world of ancient malevolent spirits who have torn their way into Kirby's boring seaside village. Kirby isn't feeling brave at all. His mother is in a coma following a freak (or was it?) accident, and he's hardly talking to his dad. He's convinced a spider is watching him, and now a weird girl in a yellow raincoat – who claims to be a powerful, evil-banishing Shadowsmith – is dragging him into unknown danger. How brave is he really? Ross MacKenzie, author of the Blue Peter award-winning The Nowhere Emporium, weaves a world of magic and adventure which twists and turns magnificently and will keep thrilled young readers guessing right to the end.

Realisms Interlinked written by Arindam Chakrabarti and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-19 with Philosophy categories.

This book brings together over 25 years of Arindam Chakrabarti's original research in philosophy on issues of epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind. Organized under the three basic concepts of a thing out there in the world, the self who perceives it, and other subjects or selves, his work revolves around a set of realism links. Examining connections between metaphysical stances toward the world, selves, and universals, Chakrabarti engages with classical Indian and modern Western philosophical approaches to a number of live topics including the refutation of idealism; the question of the definability of truth, and the possibility of truths existing unknown to anyone; the existence of non-conceptual perception; and our knowledge of other minds. He additionally makes forays into fundamental questions regarding death, darkness, absence, and nothingness. Along with conceptual clarification and progress towards alternative solutions to these substantial philosophical problems, Chakrabarti demonstrates the advantage of doing philosophy in a cosmopolitan fashion. Beginning with an analysis of the concept of a thing, and ending with an analysis of the concept of nothing, Realisms Interlinked offers a preview of a future metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of mind without borders.

Swan Legends explores the rich symbolism of swans throughout history, religion, and literature. More than just elegant birds, swans represent transformation, purity, and liminality across diverse cultures. The book reveals that swans have been potent symbols in mythology, from the tale of Leda and the Swan to Celtic swan maidens, reflecting humanity's evolving understanding of life, death, and spirituality. The book examines the historical context of swan veneration from ancient civilizations to medieval folklore and analyzes the swan as a literary motif, noting how authors use the swan to evoke themes of love, loss, and beauty. It also scrutinizes the swan’s representation across different faiths, correlating it with grace and spiritual ascension. By integrating perspectives from history, literature, and religious studies, Swan Legends provides a comprehensive analysis of the swan's symbolic power. The book unfolds in three major movements, first exploring the appearance of swans in mythology, then examining them as a literary device, and finally delving into their religious symbolism. The concluding section explores the implications of these symbols, how they inform contemporary culture, and how they are employed in modern art.

Reading Poetry offers a comprehensive and accessible guide to the art of reading poetry. Discussing more than 200 poems by more than 100 writers, ranging from ancient Greece and China to the twenty-first century, the book introduces readers to the skills and the critical and theoretical awareness that enable them to read poetry with enjoyment and insight. This third edition has been significantly updated in response to current developments in poetry and poetic criticism, and includes many new examples and exercises, new chapters on ‘world poetry’ and ‘eco-poetry’, and a greater emphasis throughout on American poetry, including the impact traditional Chinese poetry has had on modern American poetry. The seventeen carefully staged chapters constitute a complete apprenticeship in reading poetry, leading readers from specific features of form and figurative language to larger concerns with genre, intertextuality, Caribbean poetry, world poetry, and the role poetry can play in response to the ecological crisis. The workshop exercises at the end of each chapter, together with an extensive glossary of poetic and critical terms, and the number and range of poems analysed and discussed – 122 of which are quoted in full – make Reading Poetry suitable for individual study or as a comprehensive, self-contained textbook for university and college classes.

Selected Poems And Essays written by Alice Meynell and has been published by Carcanet Press Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-08-28 with Poetry categories.

Alice Meynell was a major British author of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This is the first anthology of her verse and prose to be published for over seventy-five years. Meynell was highly regarded both as a poet and as a writer of essays and was seriously proposed for the laureateship on two occasions. G.K. Chesterton said of her that she 'never wrote a line, or even a word, that does not stand like the rib of a strong intellectual structure; a thing with the bones of thought in it'. The present selection includes the early romantic poems of yearning, full of poignant surprises, and the terser, less personal poems of her maturity. Also included is a broad sample of Meynell's literary essays, in each case a careful work of art. They include reflections on literature, culture and the natural world, nuanced observations on childhood, and moving defences (both specific and general) of women against trespasses on their dignity. This selection is introduced by Alex Wong, who offers a poet's view of Meynell's distinctive artistic achievements and locates her within her literary contexts. It also includes an appreciative preface by the renowned feminist critic and theorist Laura Mulvey, who is the author's great-granddaughter.
