Excerpt from Syllabus for a Course of Study in the History of the Evolution of of the Library in Europe and America Although courses in the history of the library have been offered in other institutions and possibly along somewhat similar lines, no attempt has been made, so far as is known, to collect the materials at hand, corre late them with the social and historical development in each country, reduce this mass of data to the convenient form of a syllabus and place the result at the service of future students. The motive which has prompted the writing of this syllabus, has been largely the desire to be of assistance to the students of the library school, by helping to lighten, to some extent, the labors of note-taking, always incidental to a course for which the text-book has not yet been evolved. The outline is therefore based upon a course of lectures presented to the senior class of the Illinois state library school during the aca demic years of 1901 and 1902, and is limited to those phases of an essentially comprehensive subject to which attention has been called during the progress of the course. Excerpt from Syllabus of the Course of Study The first High School was established in Chicago in October, 1856, and was known as the Central High School. It had a four years' course. Mr. Charles I. Dupee was Principal from 1856 to 1860, and George Howland from 1860 to 1881, when he became the Superintendent of the Public Schools of Chicago. In 1875, three other High Schools were established, each with a two years' course, viz.: The West Division, corner Congress Street and Ogden Avenue; the South Division, corner Wabash Avenue and Twenty-sixth Street, and the North Division, corner Wells and Wendell Streets. In 1881, the Central was discontinued, the two years' course in each of the other three abandoned, and a four years' course was adopted for the three High Schools, one in each division of the city. In May, 1889, the North-West Division was established, and occupied rooms in the Columbus School until September, 1892, when the new building, corner Potomac Avenue and Davis Street, was opened. The English High and Manual Training School, near the corner of Halsted and Monroe Streets, was established by action of the Board of Education August 20, 1890. Take notes on the right hand page only, leaving the left-hand one free for making further notes, quotations, etc., from the books referred to. Notes should be taken in ink, in neat and plain form, with analysis clearly indicated. In taking these notes from books, however, care should be taken not to spend too much time in changing printed matter into poor penman ship. I often find students wasting time in this. Forceful statements of principles should be taken, and catchwords to aid the mind used, rather than transcripts made Of whole pages. The practice Of associating the statements Of the chief authorities with the outline in hand will prove better than over-copying. On the other hand, the student should always read with note-book in hand and Syllabus by his side, the one to receive the sparks and suggestions, the other to aid in classifying the knowledge gained.
