Das Thema Identitätsverlust und die Todes- und Selbstmordthematik ist demnach ein sehr brisantes, da der Finger genau in die Wunde gelegt wird. Ausgewählte Schlüsseltexte sind der Roman 'die Glasglocke', die 'Ariel- Gedichte' und die Tagebücher von Sylvia Plath. In drei verschiedenen Genres wird der Fragestellung nachgegangen, wie die Autorin den Themenkomplex des Todes und des Selbstmordes fiktionalisiert und dargestellt hat. Die exaltierte Darstellung des lyrischen Ich in der confessional poetry und die Verwendung von Doubles als Rollenvorbilder in einem auf Konformität bedachten Amerika der 1950er Jahre spielen neben der Ausbildung des sanktionierenden Du in den Tagebüchern eine zentrale Rolle.
