Sylvia Plath è la straordinaria voce poetica americana del Novecento, morta suicida nel 1963. Anche nell'autolesionismo, Plath si condusse come animata da un moto vitalistico. Per quanto paradossale possa apparire, poesia e morte necessitavano, dal punto di vista dell'autrice, di tale spinta estremistica. Mi preme sottolineare come in questi testi appartenenti alla “terza e conclusiva fase” poetica, stabilita dalla scansione cronologica di Ted Hughes nelle Collected Poems, si possa individuare con inequivocabile chiarezza una coincidenza tra idea della perfezione artistica e atteggiamento verso il mondo delle cose umane, che autorizza il delitto, della colpa che ha recato l'offesa e, dunque, del diritto al suicidio. Cosa possiede l'individuo? Soltanto se stesso. Con il suicidio, Plath reclama tale proprietà. Essa coincide con la libertà. Ne invoca il regno. La poesia “Edge” sembra tristemente suggerire: “quando ogni cosa mi volta le spalle, questa volontà soltanto è in mio potere. Tutto ciò che non mi può essere strappato, è ancora mio.” La morte libera perché allontana dal dolore e dalle passioni. E stabilisce, con il suicidio, il terribile impero della volontà e del rifiuto, il sacrificio assoluto del mondo. La morte attraverso l'arte offre l'autogestione di disporre di se stessi, creativamente.
