Latin books are among the most numerous surviving artifacts of the Late Antique, Mediaeval, and Renaissance periods in European history; written in a variety of formats and scripts, they preserve the literary, philosophical, scientific, and religious heritage of the West. The Oxford Handbook of Latin Palaeography surveys these books, with special emphasis on the variety of scripts in which they were written. Palaeography, in the strictest sense, examines how the changing styles of script and the fluctuating shapes of individual letters allow the date and the place of production of books to be determined. More broadly conceived, palaeography examines the totality of early book production, ownership, dissemination, and use. The Oxford Handbook of Latin Palaeography includes essays on major types of script (Uncial, Insular, Beneventan, Visigothic, Gothic, etc.), describing what defines these distinct script types, and outlining when and where they were used. It expands on previous handbooks of the subject by incorporating select essays on less well-studied periods and regions, in particular late mediaeval Eastern Europe. The Oxford Handbook of Latin Palaeography is also distinguished from prior handbooks by its extensive focus on codicology and on the cultural settings and contexts of mediaeval books. Essays treat of various important features, formats, styles, and genres of mediaeval books, and of representative mediaeval libraries as intellectual centers. Additional studies explore questions of orality and the written word, the book trade, glossing and glossaries, and manuscript cataloguing. The extensive plates and figures in the volume will provide readers wtih clear illustrations of the major points, and the succinct bibliographies in each essay will direct them to more detailed works in the field.

Ab 1180 wurde das verkleinerte Bayern als Territorialherzogtum von den Wittelsbachern regiert, die bis zum Ende der Monarchie 1918 an der Macht blieben. 1214 fiel auch die Pfalz von den Welfen an die Wittelsbacher. Bayern erlebte von 1255 bis 1503 eine Periode zahlreicher Teilungen in Einzelherzogtümer. Kurz vor der Wiedervereinigung erlangte Ludwig IV. 1328 als erster Wittelsbacher die Kaiserwürde, was für Bayern einen neuen Höhepunkt der Macht bedeutete. Gleichzeitig löste sich jedoch das Fürsterzbistum Salzburg endgültig vom Mutterland Bayern. Im Hausvertrag von Pavia von 1329 teilte Ludwig den Besitz in eine pfäl-zische Linie mit der Rheinpfalz und der später so genannten Oberpfalz und in eine altbayerische Linie auf. Die von ihm neu hinzugewonnenen Gebiete Brandenburg, Tirol, die nieder-ländischen Provinzen Holland, Seeland und Friesland sowie der Hennegau gingen unter seinen Nachfolgern sehr bald wieder verloren. Tirol fiel 1363 an die Habsburger, Brandenburg 1373 an die Luxemburger. Mit der Goldenen Bulle 1356 ging die Kurwürde für die altbayerische Linie an die der Pfalz verloren. Nach dem Aussterben der altbayerischen Linie der Wittelsbacher entstand 1777 das Doppel-Kurfürstentum Kurpfalz-Bayern unter der Regentschaft des Kurfürsten Karl Theodor aus der pfälzischen Linie der Wittelsbacher.

For the past 140 years, Germany has been the central power in continental europe. Twenty-five years ago a new German state came into being. How much do we really understand this new Germany, and how do its people understand themselves? Neil MacGregor argues that, uniquely for any European country, no coherent, overarching narrative of Germany's history can be constructed, for in Germany both geography and history have always been unstable. Its frontiers have constantly shifted. Königsberg, home to the greatest German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, is now Kaliningrad, Russia; Strasbourg, in whose cathedral Wolfgang von Geothe, Germany's greatest writer, discovered the distinctiveness of his country's art and history, now lies within the borders of France. This is an innovative analysis of the agrarian world and growth of government in early modern Germany through the medium of pre-industrial society's most basic material resource, wood. Paul Warde offers a regional study of south-west Germany from the late fifteenth to the early eighteenth century, demonstrating the stability of the economy and social structure through periods of demographic pressure, warfare and epidemic. He casts light on the nature of 'wood shortages' and societal response to environmental challenge, and shows how institutional responses largely based on preventing local conflict were poor at adapting to optimise the management of resources. Warde further argues for the inadequacy of models that oppose the 'market' to a 'natural economy' in understanding economic behaviour. This is a major contribution to debates about the sustainability of peasant society in early modern Europe, and to the growth of ecological approaches to history and historical geography.
