Excerpt from Symbols of Christ A sacred interest belongs to the few surviving memorials of men who lived before the dawn of authentic history. We are hushed into reverence when we first see the Pyramids, when we first stand in the shadow of Stonehenge, when we first come up to the spot "Where trunks o'erthrown for centuries Cumber the forest floor; And in the great savannah The solitary mound, Built by the elder world, o'erlooks The loneliness around." Excerpt from Christian Symbolism There were always two classes of symbols, fixed and arbitrary. In the one Class emblems acquired a fixed meaning, the relation Of which to the thing signified is not always traceable, though in many cases it is fairly obvious. There is no reason on the face of it why a Fish should signify Christ, or a palm-branch martyrdom and the application of the Four Living Creatures of Ezekiel and the Apocalypse to the Four Evan gelists does not explain itself very easily. Yet these and many others acquired the value Of Egyptian ideographs, and, explainable or not, were generally accepted with meanings as definite as words. This class merges by imperceptible degrees into the Class Of types, metaphors and allegories, to which every man may attach the meaning that seems good to him, and whose value depends upon their applicability. Excerpt from The History Principles and Practice of Symbolism in Christian Art While pictorial and sculptured forms have their undoubted value as exponents of truth, we must not forget that there is a possibility of such use degenerating into mere picture worship, as may be very evidently seen in the adoration paid by the Russian peasantry to their sacred pictures. Theological Symbolics Classic Reprint written by Charles Augustus Briggs and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-12 with Religion categories.

Excerpt from Theological Symbolics This book, undertaken by Dr. Briggs many years ago, was practically complete when his earthly service ended. It had been put in form for the printer, and in large part subjected to a final revision by his own hand. Since that hand was stilled, the process of verification has been carried through by his daughter - long a co-worker - Miss Emilie Grace Briggs, who has also charged herself with the necessary corrections as the book was going through the press. One to whom the teaching and the friendship of Dr. Briggs have been among the choice blessings of life has, likewise, read the proof. The volume has not been edited in any other sense than this. It is Dr. Briggs's own learning and his own convictions - deep and firm ones - that find expression in it. If he could have supervised the printing himself, he might have made minor alterations here and there, but the work represents his mature thought, and is substantially as he would have had it. No book on Symbolics will command universal assent until the unity of the Church of Christ, which was to Dr. Briggs an object of such intense desire, is actually realized. He designed this one as a means to that great end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Introduction to Early Christian Symbolism The symbolism of the paintings, glasses, and sculp tures is absolutely the same, though in the fourth cen tury slight variations and additions become noticeable in the treatment of details. A limited number of sub jects, eighteen or twenty perhaps, are repeated over and over again; so that when once the general principle running through all, and the Christian application of each subject is known, it is easy to recognise them however they may be varied or abbreviated. Excerpt from A Handbook of Christian Symbols and Stories of the Saints: As Illustrated in Art The title of the present work sufficiently indicates its general scope and purpose. It has been undertaken to satisfy a want often felt personally by the writer and often expressed to her by others. Those who go abroad and travel in Christian lands meet at every step, through town and country, in the broad light of day and in the mysterious gloom of sacred places, symbolic forms which are known in a general way to represent the mysteries and facts of the Christian faith, but which fail to recall them to the uninitiated beholder in anything like a distinct and accurate manner. Churches are dedicated to saints hitherto unheard of; and streets, sometimes large cities, bear their names. Pictures, even of saints best known, are seen, in churches and art galleries, coupled with incidents and surroundings that fairly bewilder the mind. Nor need one go abroad to feel thus puzzled and perplexed. The very pictures and prints, copied from the Great Masters, which adorn our own homes, affect us similarly. In the books which lie on our tables, in the contributions of the art critics to our newspapers and magazines, we are constantly lighting on references to names and facts of which we want ampler knowledge.
