Human love, evolution, creative minds, disease, earthquakes, wars, skyscrapers & sonnets; the ever-present life-in-death/death-in-life & that ever-present duo of good & evil: ALL of these have their way of being through the en-choiring of sympathies/antipathies that make them as they are. This book explores this EVENTUM. There is a magic of belongingness at play, whereby the longing to belong (a plus finds its minus as a bee finds its flower): a power evident in all forms of life and being, just as Goldilocks finds the best porridge. So, we find ourselves on a planet where life fine-tunes a coming together of what belongs together: a real unia sympathetica en-choiring of sympathies. - Anything that has being (as any Rabbit, Robot, Roberta or Robert) are as they are because they manifest the belongingness of things. They en-choir, become a choir that sings its song: the resonance interacting with others to form new en-choirings - and the music plays on. This a music book. Follow the bouncing ball and sing along. How these harmonies relate to breakdowns of insanities that plague human existence, is not so easy to grasp. But the same dynamics apply! We are fine-tuned to what's sympathetic and what is not: same for worms and robins. Wars and the inhumanities we perform are due to fall-out from sympathies: this causes antipathies to take-over (Newtown). Mother Nature is neutral (Sandy Hook), but operates by the same dynamic of this longing to belong in sympathy; becoming the belongingness of what can be and is as it is: love or disease. This is a book about the simplicities of this complexity, which by their interplay birth coherences in the midst of chaos: rational-stable structures form in the mayhem of the random. - Those who stay in the saddle will ride with a new vision, a new faith for the journey - "from/of the Uttermost" - to Auguries. In this en-choiring of sympathies in the context of belongings, my poems and essays sing with a full choir of others: poetries all.

The Sympathy Of Things written by Lars Spuybroek and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-21 with Architecture categories.

'If there is one thing we can learn from John Ruskin, it is that each age must find its own way to beauty' writes Lars Spuybroek in The Sympathy of Things, his ground-breaking work which proposes a radical new aesthetics for the digital era. Spuybroek argues that we must 'undo' the twentieth century and learn to understand the aesthetic insights of the nineteenth-century art critic John Ruskin, from which he distils pointers for the contemporary age. Linking philosophy, design, and the digital, with art history, architecture, and craft, Spuybroek explores the romantic notion of 'sympathy', a core concept in Ruskin's aesthetics, re-evaluating it as the driving force of the twenty-first century aesthetic experience. For Ruskin, beauty always comprises variation, imperfection and fragility, three concepts that wholly disappeared from our mindsets during the twentieth century, but which Spuybroek argues to be central to contemporary aesthetics and design. Revised throughout, and a new foreword by philosopher Brian Massumi, this is a new edition of a seminal work which has drawn praise from fields as diverse as digital architecture and speculative realism, and will continue to be influential as it wrests Ruskin's ideas out of the Victorian era and reconstructs them for the modern age.

An Archaeology Of Sympathy written by James Chandler and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with Literary Criticism categories.

In the middle of the eighteenth century, something new made itself felt in European culture—a tone or style that came to be called the sentimental. The sentimental mode went on to shape not just literature, art, music, and cinema, but people’s very structures of feeling, their ways of doing and being. In what is sure to become a critical classic, An Archaeology of Sympathy challenges Sergei Eisenstein’s influential account of Dickens and early American film by tracing the unexpected history and intricate strategies of the sentimental mode and showing how it has been reimagined over the past three centuries. James Chandler begins with a look at Frank Capra and the Capraesque in American public life, then digs back to the eighteenth century to examine the sentimental substratum underlying Dickens and early cinema alike. With this surprising move, he reveals how literary spectatorship in the eighteenth century anticipated classic Hollywood films such as Capra’s It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, and It’s a Wonderful Life. Chandler then moves forward to romanticism and modernism—two cultural movements often seen as defined by their rejection of the sentimental—examining how authors like Mary Shelley, Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf actually engaged with sentimental forms and themes in ways that left a mark on their work. Reaching from Laurence Sterne to the Coen brothers, An Archaeology of Sympathy casts new light on the long eighteenth century and the novelistic forebears of cinema and our modern world.

“A friend in history,” Henry David Thoreau once wrote, “looks like some premature soul.” And in the history of friendship in early America, Caleb Crain sees the soul of the nation’s literature. In a sensitive analysis that weaves together literary criticism and historical narrative, Crain describes the strong friendships between men that supported and inspired some of America’s greatest writing--the Gothic novels of Charles Brockden Brown, the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the novels of Herman Melville. He traces the genealogy of these friendships through a series of stories. A dapper English spy inspires a Quaker boy to run away from home. Three Philadelphia gentlemen conduct a romance through diaries and letters in the 1780s. Flighty teenager Charles Brockden Brown metamorphoses into a horror novelist by treating his friends as his literary guinea pigs. Emerson exchanges glances with a Harvard classmate but sacrifices his crush on the altar of literature--a decision Margaret Fuller invites him to reconsider two decades later. Throughout this engaging book, Crain demonstrates the many ways in which the struggle to commit feelings to paper informed the shape and texture of American literature.

An engaging and unabashedly opinionated examination of what translation is and isn't. For some, translation is the poor cousin of literature, a necessary evil if not an outright travesty—summed up by the old Italian play on words, traduttore, traditore (translator, traitor). For others, translation is the royal road to cross-cultural understanding and literary enrichment. In this nuanced and provocative study, Mark Polizzotti attempts to reframe the debate along more fruitful lines. Eschewing both these easy polarities and the increasingly abstract discourse of translation theory, he brings the main questions into clearer focus: What is the ultimate goal of a translation? What does it mean to label a rendering “faithful”? (Faithful to what?) Is something inevitably lost in translation, and can something also be gained? Does translation matter, and if so, why? Unashamedly opinionated, both a manual and a manifesto, his book invites usto sympathize with the translator not as a “traitor” but as the author's creative partner. Polizzotti, himself a translator of authors from Patrick Modiano to Gustave Flaubert, explores what translation is and what it isn't, and how it does or doesn't work. Translation, he writes, “skirts the boundaries between art and craft, originality and replication, altruism and commerce, genius and hack work.” In Sympathy for the Traitor, he shows us how to read not only translations but also the act of translation itself, treating it not as a problem to be solved but as an achievement to be celebrated—something, as Goethe put it, “impossible, necessary, and important.”

OLD WAR. NEW ENEMIES. THE DEVIL HAS ARRIVED. The University has been a clandestine organization since the days of the OSS. The University and its agents have always lived in the shadows; using its vast intelligence resources to help defeat the Nazis, end the Cold War and strike back at terrorists all over the globe. They have been at the forefront of global espionage for decades. Entrusted with running The University, James Hicks is one of the most powerful—and secretive—men alive. But when Hick’s brilliant protege is turned by a terrorist group that has alarmingly already begun operating on U.S. soil, Hicks finds himself in a race against time to find out just how the agent has been turned and why. He must use The University’s covert global network to uncover a deadly biological plot that threatens to unleash a new era of chaos and anarchy not only on the United States, but on the entire western world. A fast-paced contemporary thriller that calls to mind classics like The Day of the Jackal and The Hunt for Red October; Terrence McCauley has crafted a riveting novel of espionage that will immediately raise him to the forefront of our very best spy novelists.
