Forests and forestry in temperate regions face what may appear to be contradictory goals: to increase atmospheric carbon capture through sequestration in biomass and soils, while providing a growing share of the resources needed to produce essential material goods and energy for human societies as well as gradually renewing forests to enable them to adapt to future climate conditions. INRAE and IGN, at the request of the French Ministries responsible for agriculture and forestry, have jointly undertaken a scientific assessment to shed light on the details of this debate

The global response to climate change will demand unprecedented international cooperation, deep economic transformation and resource transfers at a significant scale. Corruption threatens to jeopardise these efforts. Transparency International's Global Corruption Report: Climate Change is the first publication to comprehensively explore such corruption risks. More than fifty leading experts and practitioners contribute, covering four key areas: governance: investigating major governance challenges towards tackling climate change mitigating climate change: reducing greenhouse gas emissions with transparency and accountability adapting to climate change: identifying corruption risks in climate-proofing development, financing and implementation of adaptation forestry governance: responding to the corruption challenges plaguing the forestry sector, and how these challenges need to be integrated into current international strategies to halt deforestation and promote reforestation. The Global Corruption Report: Climate Change provides essential policy analysis to help policy-makers, practitioners and other stakeholders understand these risks and develop effective responses at a critical point in time when the main architecture for climate governance is being developed.

An Historical Geography Of France written by Xavier de Planhol and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-03-17 with History categories.

In this 1994 book, Xavier de Planhol and Paul Claval, two of France's leading scholars in the field, trace the historical geography of their country from its roots in the Roman province of Gaul to the 1990s. They demonstrate how, for centuries, France was little more than an ideological concept, despite its natural physical boundaries and long territorial history. They examine the relatively late development of a more complex territorial geography, involving political, religious, cultural, agricultural and industrial unities and diversities. The conclusion reached is that only in the twentieth century had France achieved a profound territorial unity and only now are the fragmentations of the past being overwritten.

The Power Of Freedom written by Jean-Pierre Chauffour and has been published by Cato Institute this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-01 with Political Science categories.

Are the quests for human rights and economic development compatible? In this thought-provoking book, Jean-Pierre Chauffour argues that the answer depends on the place given to freedom in both human rights and development. When freedom advances, prosperity and human rights progress. When freedom is threatened—especially economic and civil liberties—fundamental human rights are violated and economic development suffers. Yet although the connection between rights and development has long been recognized, practice has not followed principle. Human rights advocates and economic development experts rarely engage each other and often work at cross purposes. Moreover, the proposition that freedom plays a central role in both agendas challenges a number of human rights and development orthodoxies as well as practices developed over the last 60 years. A reconciliation of the human rights and development communities is possible. It requires highlighting the role that freedom plays in both. Rights advocates must recognize economic liberty as an essential component of human rights, and development experts must recognize the broad range of institutions and economic policies consistent with human rights. With his engaging style, Chauffour makes clear that empowering people with economic freedom, civil rights, and political liberties is the best way to ensure development and respect for the individual. This book provides major lessons to meet the challenges of securing freedom, peace, and prosperity.

A Civil Society written by James Smith Allen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05 with categories.

A Civil Society explores the struggle to initiate women as full participants in the masonic brotherhood that shared in the rise of France's civil society and its "civic morality" on behalf of women's rights. As a vital component of the third sector during France's modernization, freemasonry empowered women in complex social networks, contributing to a more liberal republic, a more open society, and a more engaged public culture. James Smith Allen shows that although women initially met with stiff resistance, their induction into the brotherhood was a significant step in the development of French civil society and its "civic morality," including the promotion of women's rights in the late nineteenth century. Pulling together the many gendered facets of masonry, Allen draws from periodicals, memoirs, and archival material to account for the rise of women within the masonic brotherhood in the context of rapid historical change. Thanks to women's social networks and their attendant social capital, masonry came to play a leading role in French civil society and the rethinking of gender relations in the public sphere.

Theophrastus On Stones written by E. R. Caley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

The publication of "Theophrastus on Stones" is without question an important event for scholars and students interested in the history of pure and applied science. By common consent one of the greatest of the Greek philosophers and naturalists, Theophrastus is still a highly significant figure in the development of mineralogy and other scientific and technological areas, yet no modern annotated translation of his treatise "On Stones" has hitherto been available. It has been more than two hundred years since the first English translation by John Hill appeared. French and German translations have been published within the last fifty years as parts of other works, but they contain neither text nor commentary. This book, which includes the original text, an English translation, and a commentary, gives the reader-with or without a knowledge of Greek-an invaluable interpretation of the technical aspects of the treatise and the rationale of the processes described in it. It will have a wide appeal not merely for the classical scholar but for a larger public whose interests lie in such scientific fields as chemistry, archaeology, mineralogy, and geology. Earle R. Caley and John F. C. Richards have brought to completion a book which is a distinguished addition to scientific and classical literature. Earle Radcliffe Caley, a native of Ohio, received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State. From 1928 to 1942 he taught at Princeton University. On several occasions he served as a chemist for the excavation of the Agora at Athens, Greece. Since 1946 he has been on the faculty of Ohio State's Department of Chemistry. Professor Caley has written on various applications of chemistry to archaeology. For certain articles in this special field, he received the Lewis Prize of the American Philosophical Society in 1940 and a citation from the American Classical League in 1954. John Francis Chatterton Richards, author of various publications on classical literature, was graduated B.A. at Oxford in 1921 and M.A. in 1927. He began teaching at Dartmouth College in 1927. From 1930 to 1936 he was Instructor and Tutor at Harvard University, from which he received the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees. He has taught classics at the University of Rochester, and, since 1939, has been in the Department of Classics at Columbia University.
