A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralised by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same period. It follows the lives of several characters through these events. With sales of over 200 million copies, A Tale of Two Cities is the biggest selling novel in history.

A Tale of Two Cities is one of Dickens' shorter works, though still written in his usual style and so no less of an entertaining read for that. While not widely regarded as one of his greatest, A Tale of Two Cities is nevertheless a must read novel for any fan of Charles Dickens' writing. Set in the year 1775 the story forms in pre-revolutionary France with a London banker Jarvis Lorry and his companion Miss Lucie Manette on a quest to re-unite Miss Manette with her father whom she had presumed dead. Five years later the second book begins with the character Charles Darney on trial accused of spying for the French – From here the plot takes us back into France and the actions of the Defarges with their band of revolutionaries. Dickens’ descriptions of pre-revolutionary France are fantastic in that he is able to truly show the extent of the depraved state of the common French populace – the capturing as, he is so often able to do, of the very essence of the times, is one of the many characteristics that make Charles Dickens a writer of true masterpieces. If you enjoy this book (or even if not) be sure to read the full collection of Dickens’ books available on Forgotten Books – thorough knowledge of Charles Dickens and his works is almost a necessity for any lover of fictional literature. Excerpt from The Adventures of Oliver Twist Among other public buildings in a certain town, which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, there is one anciently common to most towns, great or small; to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born: on a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events; the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter. For a long time after it was ushered into this world of sorrow and trouble, by the parish surgeon, it remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all; in which case it is somewhat more than probable that these memoirs would never have appeared; or, if they had that being comprised within a couple of pages, they would have possessed the inestimable merit of being the most concise and faithful specimen of biography extant, in the literature of any age or country. Excerpt from The Novels and Tales of Charles Dickens, (Boz.), Vol. 1 of 3: Containing the Pickwick Papers, And, the Old Curiosity Shop It is obvious that in a work published with a view to such considerations, no artfully interwoven or ingeniously complicated plot can with reason he expected. The author ventures to express a hope that he has successfully surmounted the difficulties of his undertaking. And if it be objected to the Pickwick Papers. That they are a mere series of adventures, in which the scenes are ever changing, and the characters come and go like the men and women we encounter in the real world, he can only content himself with the reflection, that they claim to be nothing else, and that the same objection has been made to the works of some of the greatest novelists in the English language. Excerpt from Great Expectations ON the first of December, 1860, Dickens began the publica tion, in all the Year Round, of his novel. Of Great Expectations, and closed it in the number of that weekly which appeared on the third of August, His first intention, as in the case of The Old Curiosity Shop, was to write a short sketch or story for the periodical he edited. Forster had suggested to him that he should try something in his old way, - something which would recall to the public his vouthful achievements in humorous scenes and characterize tions. Dickens replied. For a little piece I have been writ ing - or am writing - for I hope to finish it to-day - such a very fine, new, and grotesque idea has opened upon me, that I begin to doubt whether I had not better cancel the little paper, md reserve the notion for a new book. You shall judge as soon as I get it printed. But it so opens out before me, that I can see the whole of a serial revolving on it, in a most singu lar and comic manner. This grotesque idea was, doubtless, the relation established between Pip and Magwitch, which might easily have been narrated in a few charming pages, such as those in which he had disposed of the genus of many other romances, in the series of essays, sketches, and portraitures of life, which he was then writing under the general title of The Uncommercial Traveller. But the idea of an innocent boy, establishing unconsciously an immense influence over the mind of a hunted felon, simply by giving him that assistance which he dared not refuse, haunted Dickens's imagination until he gathered round it a whole new world of characters and. Reprinted Pieces: Essays from Household Words Paperback - December 5, 2015 by Charles Dickens (Author Dickens was obsessed with reading, making him a natural journalist by the age of 20, when he began a career in journalism. Along the way, he also began writing his own short stories and materials, often serializing them in monthly installments in publications, a popular method of publishing in the 19th century. Unlike most writers, Dickens would not write an entire story before it began its serialization, allowing him to work on the fly and leave plot lines up in the air with each opportunity. By the time he died at the relatively young age of 58 from a stroke, he was already Europe's most famous writer. His obituary noted that Dickens was a "sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed." Dickens was interred in Westminster Abbey, a rare honor bestowed only among the greatest and most accomplished Britons. Many of Dickens' novels were written with the concept of social reform in mind, and Dickens' work was often praised for its realism, comic genius and unique personalities. At the same time, however, Dickens' ability as a writer was nearly unrivaled, with his ability to write in prose unquestioned and unmatched We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. With well over 200 million copies sold and opening and closing lines that are among the most familiar in all of literature, "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859) is one of the best known and most widely-read books in all of literary fiction. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the novel depicts the suffering of the French peasantry at the hands of the aristocracy and the subsequent abuses of the revolutionaries and their brutality against the aristocrats. Dickens, ever the social critic, manages to draw parallels to English society, and especially the stratified society of London, while creating his hallmark complex characters and compelling story. It has been remarked that Sydney Carton, a dissolute and disillusioned London barrister, is nonetheless the only protagonist in any of Dickens' major works who is, in the classical sense, heroic. While following several characters, the central plot revolves around Carton, Charles Darnay, a virtuous French aristocrat who falls prey to the wide-ranging and unreasoning fury of the Revolution, and Darnay's wife. Born in Portsmouth England on February 7, 1812, Charles Dickens enjoyed a comfortable childhood until his father lost his post at the Navy Pay Office and ultimately landed in debtors' prison. Young Charles embarked upon an horrific stint pasting labels on jars of bootblack in a rat-infested slum. He would later find work as a newspaper writer, covering politics and then the courts. These experiences, with his almost photographic memory, would provide him with material for the colorful characters and vivid depictions of life in England which would characterize his work for decades. The publication of "The Pickwick Papers" in serial form in 1836 brought Dickens success. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity. Ultimately he would become the foremost novelist of the Victorian era and one of the most widely read writers in history. His books have never gone out of print, have been turned into films and plays, and are still widely read today. Along with his compelling storylines and unforgettable characters, Dickens' stories served as vehicles for social commentary, often harshly critical of class stratification and public institutions. In particular, and contrary to prevailing views, Dickens championed the poor, whom he saw as wretched not because of their own weaknesses and moral failures but because of their helplessness before society's attitudes and institutions. And yet Dickens managed throughout to maintain a humorous element, and satire and caricature fill the pages of his works. Dickens died on June 9, 1870, following a stroke. Given the body of work he left behind, it is striking to note that Charles Dickens was just 58 years old at his death.
