On utilise aujourd'hui le français dans un domaine qui dépasse largement les frontières du territoire national. Aussi bien paraît-il judicieux d'offrir à ce vaste public un ouvrage qui corresponde à ses préoccupations d'une meilleure connaissance de la langue qu'il emploie. Cette Syntaxe se destine avant tout aux usagers de l'Université. Mais elle intéresse également tous ceux qui veulent s'éclairer sur tel ou tel mécanisme du français et sont soucieux de mettre à jour leurs connaissances. Ecrite dans un langage clair et accessible, elle intègre les acquis procurés par la recherche dans ces dernières décennies. Elle œuvre ainsi, sans exclusive ni parti pris, à la nécessaire conciliation entre « grammaire classique » et « linguistique moderne », naguère trop souvent affrontées non sans dommages pour l'une comme pour l'autre. La méthode mise en œuvre vise au regroupement des faits d'après le critère du fonctionnement et l'intérêt se porte essentiellement sur le français moderne et contemporain. Mais la langue médiévale, classique ou post-classique se trouve régulièrement sollicitée quand il s'agit d'éclairer des phénomènes qui, sans cette plongée rétrospective, demeureraient pour nous indéchiffrables. Enfin, si la forme écrite constitue le fondement général des analyses, l'oral n'en a pas été pour autant négligé quand il porte témoignage de l'usage. La référence nécessaire à l'histoire de la langue et une modernité résolue guident l'esprit de cet ouvrage, en sorte qu'apparaît dans une bonne lumière l'état du français de notre temps. Hervé-D. Béchade est professeur à la Sorbonne, directeur de L'Institut de langue française (Paris IV).
