Cette etude porte sur la synthese organique et la caracterisation physico-chimique de nouveaux cristaux liquides ferroelectriques concus pour l'optique non lineaire. Ces nouveaux modeles de cristaux liquides ont deja fait l'objet d'une etude de simulation. Le but du projet a long terme est donc de correler les mesures experimentales obtenues avec celles acquises auparavant par la modelisation moleculaire. Les cristaux liquides obtenus dans le cadre de cet ouvrage possedent tous une mesophase smectique C. Les facteurs structuraux permettant cette mesophase sont encore mal compris jusqu'a ce jour. L'influence de petits changements au sein des mesogenes (tel que les longueurs de chaine, les groupements installes sur ceux-ci, etc.) influence grandement la stabilite thermique de cette mesophase comme en temoigne cet ouvrage. Cette mesophase est particulierement interessante, car elle suscite un interet dans le domaine de l'optique non lineaire pour la generation de seconde harmonique. De plus, les mesogenes possedant un centre chiral transforment la mesophase smectique C en smectique C chiral par des contraintes de symetrie."

Notre thématique de recherche concerne la chimie des cristaux liquides. Nos travaux de thèse consistent en la synthèse de dendrimères liquides-cristallins contenant du fullerène et l'étude de leurs propriétés thermiques et mésomorphes. Ce type de matériaux est intéressant par la combinaison des propriétés du fullerène avec celles des cristaux liquides et des dendrimères. Notre travail de thèse s'est basé sur trois sujets différents. Dans un premier temps, nous avons synthétisé des méthanofullerènes de type " Janus " à partir des dendrons poly(aryl esters) et poly(aliphatique esters) qui sont précurseurs pour des phases nématiques chirales et smectiques chirales, respectivement. L'influence de la chiralité, de la génération de chaque dendron et du fullerène sur les propriétés mésomorphes a été étudiée. Tous les méthanofullerènes et les précurseurs malonates présentent une phase nématique chirale imposée par les dendrons poly(aryl esters). Le dendron poly(aliphatique ester) ne peut imposer ses propriétés mésomorphes aux méthanofullerènes et aux malonates que lorsque la génération de ce dendron est largement supérieure à celle du dendron poly(aryl ester). La présence du fullerène déstabilise les mésophases et elle n'est pas favorable pour l'arrangement hélicoïdal de phase smectique C chirale. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons réussi à synthétiser la première dyade fullerène-oligophénylènevinylène possédant des propriétés liquides-cristallines colonnaires. Le dendron poly(benzyl éther) de troisième génération a été tout d'abord synthétisé comme promoteur de la phase colonnaire. Cette dyade présente une phase colonnaire hexagonale de symétrie p6mm qui a été confirmée par microscopie à lumière polarisé, calorimétrie à balayage différentiel et diffraction des rayons X. Les premières études de photophysique sur cette dyade ont aussi été réalisées. Elles ont montré qu'il existe un transfert d'électrons entre le fullerène et oligophénylènevinylène.
