The main objective of the present thesis is to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms involved in catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and related processes, such as the catalytic hydrogenation, and to use this knowledge to optimize the experimental approaches in order to gain better control in the synthesis and modification of carbon nanomaterials. Controlled growth of the CNT is achieved using gas-phase prepared catalyst particles (Fe, Co) which serve as individual catalytic nucleation sites in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. These studies highlight that the controlled preparation of catalyst particles is a crucial step in order to control the CNT morphology. The resultant CNT diameter and the CNT density are found to increase with increasing nanoparticle diameter and density, respectively. The number of walls of the CNT also increases with increasing primary catalyst size. The experimentally derived correlations between the particle diameter on one hand and the CNT diameter and the CNT number of walls on the other hand are attributed to an increase of the catalyst's volume-to-surface area ratio with increasing particle size. While the availability of carbon dissolved within the catalyst at the point of nucleation is determined by the catalyst volume, the amount of carbon required to form a cap depends on the surface area of the catalyst particle. Electron microscopy studies of the catalyst/substrate/carbon interfaces of CNT grown from Fe nanoparticles reveal that the CNT walls are anchored to the oxide substrate which contests the general argument that the CNT walls stem from atomic steps at the catalyst. It is argued that after nucleation, the substrate itself provides a catalytic functionality towards the stimulation of ongoing CNT growth, whereas the catalytic activity of the metal particle is more restricted to the nucleation process. Selective hard-magnetic functionalization of CNT tips has been achieved in a plasma-enhanced CVD process.

The expansion of carbon materials is multidisciplinary and is related to physics, chemistry, biology, applied sciences and engineering. The research on carbon materials has mostly focused on aspects of fundamental physics as they unique electrical, thermal and mechanical properties applicable for the range of applications. The electrons in graphene and other derived carbon materials behave as dirac fermions due to their interaction with the ions of the lattice. This direction has led to the discovery of new phenomena such as Klein tunneling in carbon based solid state systems and the so-called half-integer quantum Hall effect. Advanced Carbon Materials and Technology presents cutting-edge chapters on the processing, properties and technological developments of graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers, carbon particles and other carbon based structures including multifunctional graphene sheets, graphene quantum dots, bulky balls, carbon balls, and their polymer composites. This book brings together respected international scholars writing on the innovative methodologies and strategies adopted in carbon materials research area including Synthesis, characterization and functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene Surface modification of graphene Carbon based nanostructured materials Graphene and carbon nanotube based electrochemical (bio)sensors for environmental monitoring Carbon catalysts for hydrogen storage materials Optical carbon nanoobjects Graphene and carbon nanotube based biosensors Carbon doped cryogel films Bioimpact of carbon nanomaterials Photocatalytic nature of carbon nanotube based composites Engineering behavior of ash fills Fly ash syntactic foams microstructure

Since their discovery more than a decade ago, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have held scientists and engineers in captive fascination, seated on the verge of enormous breakthroughs in areas such as medicine, electronics, and materials science, to name but a few. Taking a broad look at CNTs and the tools used to study them, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications comprises the efforts of leading nanotube researchers led by Michael O’Connell, protégé of the late father of nanotechnology, Richard Smalley. Each chapter is a self-contained treatise on various aspects of CNT synthesis, characterization, modification, and applications. The book opens with a general introduction to the basic characteristics and the history of CNTs, followed by discussions on synthesis methods and the growth of “peapod” structures. Coverage then moves to electronic properties and band structures of single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs), magnetic properties, Raman spectroscopy of electronic and chemical behavior, and electromechanical properties and applications in NEMS (nanoelectromechanical systems). Turning to applications, the final sections of the book explore mechanical properties of SWNTs spun into fibers, sidewall functionalization in composites, and using SWNTs as tips for scanning probe microscopes. Taking a fresh look at this burgeoning field, Carbon Nanotubes: Properties and Applications points the way toward making CNTs commercially viable.

After a brief introduction to the fundamental properties of graphene, this book focuses on synthesis, characterization and application of various types of two-dimensional (2D) nanocarbons ranging from single/few layer graphene to carbon nanowalls and graphene oxides. Three major synthesis techniques are covered: epitaxial growth of graphene on SiC, chemical synthesis of graphene on metal, and chemical vapor deposition of vertically aligned carbon nanosheets or nanowalls. One chapter is dedicated to characterization of 2D nanocarbon using Raman spectroscopy. It provides extensive coverage for applications of 2D carbon in energy storage including supercapacitor, lithium ion battery and fuel cells.
