In this thesis, a numerical tool is elaborated by combining a Stark lineshape code with another code developed for the calculation of the recombination continuum due to bound-free and free-free transitions. The tool is intended to model whole Balmer spectra emitted by hydrogen or deuterium atoms for tokamak divertor plasma conditions with a focus on recombining plasmas (detachment regime). In addition to Stark line broadening, the plasma environment affects hydrogen atoms by lowering the ionization potential leading to the advance of the continuum. For hydrogen emission, these statistical plasma effects are retained using the dissolution factor approach which allows the modeling of the gradual line merging into the continuum. In this approach, bound levels are considered as free levels beyond a critical level depending on the plasma parameters. The approach is implemented by extending the continuum beyond the theoretical series limit and transforming bound levels to free ones. For simplicity, beyonf the Inglis-Teller limit, the profiles of the Balmer lines are extrapolated from that of the last resolved line. For low electron densities, the line intensities are calculated using a collisional-radiative model. The numerical tool was checked by comparison with an experimental spectrum from literature. The numerical tool was applied to predict synthetic spectra for WEST using spatial distributions of the hydrogen density and of the plasma parameters simulated along viewing chords by the transport code SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE. This approach of synthetic diagnostics of plasma spectroscopy, can easily be extended for efficient predictions for future fusion devices like ITER and DEMO.

Filling a gap in the literature, this introduction to the topic covers the physics of the standard microwave diagnostics established on modern fusion experiments, and the necessary technological background from the field of microwave engineering. Written by well-known mm-wave diagnosticians in the field of fusion physics, the textbook includes such major diagnostic techniques as electron cyclotron emission, interferometry, reflectometry, polarimetry, and scattering.

Fusion energy has great potential to meet the ever increasing global energy demand. The most promising magnetic confinement device, the tokamak, remains the dominant candidate for fusion power generation. The generated thermal power from tokamaks is comparable to fission nuclear power, but with no possibility of catastrophic accidents (such as the melting of fuel rods in the Fukushima I reactors caused by the failure of the cooling systems) if the facilities were damaged. This safety feature arises from the fact that magnetic fusion can only be achieved under very precise circumstances, and damage to any key system will immediately result in a cessation of the fusion reaction. Our goal is to develop advanced visualization tools via imaging diagnostics to provide fundamental physics understanding and thus help determine the optimum path to achieve and sustain magnetic fusion. High resolution Terahertz (THz) imaging diagnostics are exceptionally well suited to this task due to the characteristic properties of fusion plasmas at THz frequencies. High performance electronics have been developed for the far-infrared tangential interferometer and polarimeter (FIReTIP) system on the National Spherical Tokamak Experiment (NSTX) device. This work significantly increased both the phase and temporal resolution of the FIReTIP system, thereby allowing it to monitor high frequency density and magnetic field fluctuations up to 4 MHz with unprecedented accuracy, which is of critical performance as characterizing these fluctuations are essential in understanding transport physics issues in fusion plasmas. The millimeter-wave and THz spectral region offers tremendous potential for a diverse range of applications outside of plasma diagnostics in fields such as communications, biomedical diagnostics, remote imaging and concealed weapons detection. The unique THz spectral region offers exciting and novel application opportunities arising from its inherent advantages in spatial resolution and data rate, bandwidth, and component compactness, but the lack of sufficient source power has not been adequately solved. High power radiation sources in the THz range also have considerable application in advanced fusion plasma diagnostics. Work is presented herein on the design of waveguide components and a high efficiency pulse modulator to support the development of integrated high power sources for fusion diagnostics and other applications.

Introduction To Plasma Spectroscopy written by Hans-Joachim Kunze and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-18 with Science categories.

Although based on lectures given for graduate students and postgraduates starting in plasma physics, this concise introduction to the fundamental processes and tools is as well directed at established researchers who are newcomers to spectroscopy and seek quick access to the diagnostics of plasmas ranging from low- to high-density technical systems at low temperatures, as well as from low- to high-density hot plasmas. Basic ideas and fundamental concepts are introduced as well as typical instrumentation from the X-ray to the infrared spectral regions. Examples, techniques and methods illustrate the possibilities. This book directly addresses the experimentalist who actually has to carry out the experiments and their interpretation. For that reason about half of the book is devoted to experimental problems, the instrumentation, components, detectors and calibration.

An Analysis Of Synchrotron Radiation From Relativistic Electrons In The Alcator C Mod Tokamak written by Roy Alexander Tinguely and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with categories.

In the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, a magnetic confinement fusion experiment, electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies -- on the order of tens of MeV -- during steady-state conditions of Ohmic, elongated, and diverted plasma discharges. These so-called "runaway" electrons emit synchrotron radiation in their direction of motion due to their gyration in the background toroidal magnetic field, with values of B0 ranging from 2.7 to 7.8 T at the plasma axis. Two spectrometers, a wide-view camera, and a polarimeter are used to measure time-evolving spectra, images, and polarization information, respectively, of the synchrotron radiation in the visible/near-infrared wavelength range, [lambda] ~~ 300-1000 nm. The kinetic equation solver Code [Landreman et al 2014 Comput. Phys. Commun., Stahl et al 2016 Nucl. Fusion] and synthetic diagnostic Soft [Hoppe et al 2018 Nucl. Fusion] are used to model the evolution of the runaway electron phase space distribution and to simulate the detected synchrotron emission, respectively. The major contributions of this thesis work to the fields of plasma physics and fusion energy research are the following: Spectral measurements are consistent with runaway electrons' attaining lower energies as the magnetic field increases, a positive sign for future high-field fusion devices. The runaway electron density profile and other spatiotemporal dynamics, such as increased radial transport due to magnetohydrodynamic activity, are inferred from the two-dimensional synchrotron intensity distributions captured in camera images. Finally, for the first time in a tokamak plasma experiment, polarized synchrotron light is used as a novel diagnostic of the pitch angle distribution of runaway electrons. For all three measurements, discrepancies between experiment and theory/simulation are identified, and opportunities for future work are presented.
