The Ba'th Party established its regime in Syria following the coup d'etat of March 8, 1963. During the period 1963-66, Syria underwent significant social and political changes while the nature of the Ba'th party itself was deeply altered. This book establishes the chronology of the period, identifies the issues and the acting forces that shaped it, and evaluates the significance of these changes and developments.Particular emphasis is placed on the unique relationship between the leaders of the Syrian army and the Ba'th party organization, and the role played in Syrian politics by sectarian loyalties and tensions. Syria's complex relationship with Egypt and President Nasser and the dichotomy of the Ba'th regime and the Syrian population are covered in detail. The reader is presented with several useful appendixes*unobtainable elsewhere: lists of Syrian cabinets, Ba'th party congresses, National and Regional Commands, Ba'th and Syrian personalities, and the first English translation of a major Ba'thi ideological text.

State Building And Late Development written by David Waldner and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Business & Economics categories.

Why does state building sometimes promote economic growth and in other cases impede it? Through an analysis of political and economic development in four countries--Turkey, Syria, Korea, and Taiwan--this book explores the origins of political-economic institutions and the mechanisms connecting them to economic outcomes. David Waldner extends our understanding of the political underpinnings of economic development by examining the origins of political coalitions on which states and their institutions depend. He first provides a political model of institutional change to analyze how elites build either cross-class or narrow coalitions, and he examines how these arrangements shape specific institutions: state-society relations, the nature of bureaucracy, fiscal structures, and patterns of economic intervention. He then links these institutions to economic outcomes through a bargaining model to explain why countries such as Korea and Taiwan have more effectively overcome the collective dilemmas that plague economic development than have others such as Turkey and Syria. The latter countries, he shows, lack institutional solutions to the problems that surround productivity growth. The first book to compare political and economic development in these two regions, State Building and Late Development draws on, and contributes to, arguments from political sociology and political economy. Based on a rigorous research design, the work offers both a finely drawn comparison of development and a compellingly argued analysis of the character and consequences of "precocious Keynesianism," the implementation of Keynesian demand-stimulus policies in largely pre-industrial economies.

In 1967 the future of the state of Israel was far from certain. But with its swift and stunning military victory against an Arab coalition led by Egypt in the Six Day War, Israel not only preserved its existence but redrew the map of the region, with fateful consequences. The Camp DavidAccords, the assassinations of Anwar Sadat and Yitzhak Rabin, the intifada, and the current troubled peace negotiations--all of these trace their origins to the Six Day War.Michael Oren's Six Days of War is a gripping account of one of the most dramatic and important episodes in the history of the Middle East. With exhaustive research in primary sources--including Soviet, Jordanian, and Syrian files not previously available--he has reconstructed the tension-filledbackground and the dramatic military events of the conflict, drawing the threads together in a riveting narrative, enlivened by crisp characters sketches of major characters (many of whom, from Ariel Sharon to Yasser Arafat, are still leading figures today). Most important, Oren has unearthed somedramatic new findings. He has discovered that a top-secret Egyptian plan to invade Israel and wipe out its army and nuclear reactor came within hours of implementation. He also reveals how the superpowers narrowly avoided a nuclear showdown over the Eastern Mediterranean and how a military coup inIsrael almost occurred on the eve of the war.

Traditional studies of linkage politics tend to assume that internal political instability leads a government to divert attention from internal problems by initiating an external conflict or stressing the pressures of international problems. In contrast, quantitative studies typically conclude that there is little or no relationship between interna
