The “Metaphysical Principles of the Doctrine of Virtue” (Metaphysische Anfangsgründe der Tugendlehre) is the second part of the “Metaphysics of Morals” (Metaphysik der Sitten), published by Kant in 1797. This monographic study comments Kant´s Tugendlehre as a refutation of the “formalist” vision of Kant´s Ethics. This late writing is shown as consistent with the moral philosophy already presented in the “Groundwork” and the second “Critique”. The “Doctrine of Virtue” offers Kant´s application of the categorical imperative and acknowledges the conditions of moral motivation and, in general, of human agency. Kant´s derivation of duties of virtue (Tugendpflichten) is attentive to the fundamental characteristics of human nature, therefore it generates a system of ends that reason itself shows to be obligatory for the human faculty of choice. This book shows that Kant´s “Doctrine of Virtue” is worthy of being taken into a greater philosophical consideration. In two often neglected passages of the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant submits that the Critique is a 'treatise' or a 'doctrine of method'. These passages are puzzling because the Critique is only cursorily concerned with identifying adequate procedures of argument for philosophy. In this book, Gabriele Gava argues that these passages point out that the Critique is the doctrine of method of metaphysics. Doctrines of method have the task of showing that a given science is indeed a science because it possesses 'architectonic unity' – which happens when it realizes the 'idea' of a science. According to Gava's novel approach, the Critique establishes that metaphysics is capable of this unity, and his reading of the Critique from this perspective not only illuminates the central role of the Transcendental Doctrine of Method within it, but also clarifies the relationship between the different parts of the work.

Kant and Aristotle reassesses the prevailing understanding of Kant as an anti-Aristotelian philosopher. Taking epistemology, logic, and methodology to be the key disciplines through which Kant's transcendental philosophy stood as an independent form of philosophy, Marco Sgarbi shows that Kant drew important elements of his logic and metaphysical doctrines from Aristotelian ideas that were absent in other philosophical traditions, such as the distinction of matter and form of knowledge, the division of transcendental logic into analytic and dialectic, the theory of categories and schema, and the methodological issues of the architectonic. Drawing from unpublished documents including lectures, catalogues, academic programs, and the Aristotelian-Scholastic handbooks that were officially adopted at Königsberg University where Kant taught, Sgarbi further demonstrates the historical and philosophical importance of Aristotle and Aristotelianism to these disciplines from the late sixteenth century to the first half of the eighteenth century.

TOPOLOGIE DES LOGOS UND KANT-INTERPRET A TION § I. Topologie des Logos Die Geschichte der Philosophie ist die Geschichte der Entwicklung des Logos. Jedes System der Philosophie hat seinen Logos. Jedes System der Philosophie, welches seinen Logos hat, ist vom Standpunkte der Entwicklung der Philosophie als Ganzem gesehen eine notwendige Entwicklung des Logos. Die Geschichte der Philosophie ist, wie Hegel sagte, eine Entwicklung des absoluten Geistes. Aber diese Entwicklung des Logos soll man nicht als dialektische Entwicklung, wie Hegel sie sah, bezeichnen. Vielmehr befindet sich das System der Hegelschen Philosophie selber an einer besonderen Stelle der Entwicklung des Logos. Die Entwicklung des Logos ist nicht immer dialektisch-formelle Entwicklung und wird nicht in Dialektik bis zum Äußersten getrieben. Wir müssen uns davor hüten, die Entwicklung des Logos formell dialek tisch zu sehen. Vielmehr müssen wir die Entwicklung des Logos - in der Phase der notwendigen Entwicklung, in der er sich befinde- positiv betrachten. Dialektische Konstruktion der Geschichte der Philosophie auf Kosten der Tatsachen, wie Hegel sie trieb, ist dogma tisch-idealitisches Verhalten, und unser Verhalten soll nicht solches sein. Betrachten wir positiv die Entwicklung des Logos in der Geschich te der Philosophie, so entsteht nicht dialektische Geschichtsauffassung, sondern Topologie der Entwicklung des Logos: kurz, die Topologie des Logo::. Nach der Topologie des Logos wird jedem System der Philoso phie sein Topos in der Entwicklung des Logos als Ganzem gegeben.

This is Volume VII in The Complete Works of Immanuel Kant from Newcomb Livraria Press. Kant's Critique of Pure Reason lays the foundation of his Systematic Metaphysics published across a dozen works with the singular aim of 'fixing' the field by reconciling Rationalism, Idealism, and Empiricism to move Metaphysics into a full form of Science, much, in the same manner, the Greeks did to Logic or The Renaissance logicians to the hard sciences. Kant sparked a metaphysical revolution which he understands as akin to the Copernican revolution. The question of how the iterations of the transcendent 'I' through time and space can 'know' anything (make synthetic a priori judgments) with any level of certainty takes the proscenium in the Critique. David Hume's fundamental error in Kant's view is that he assumes a Rationality which is Techne without Telos, a description only of what is, not what should be. To this end, he uses a Greek conception of Rationality as logos within a Platonic Ontology, splitting reality into two subdivisions between form and sense- perception, between Numinal and a phenomenological world. As physics is pure science, metaphysics is pure philosophy; "Pure knowledge of reason from mere concepts is called pure philosophy, or metaphysics... Metaphysics, then, both of nature and of morals, and especially the critique of reason venturing out on its own wings, which precedes it in a propaedeutic way, are actually the only things that we can call philosophy in the true sense of the word".

Der Autor bietet eine Darstellung spannungsreicher Formen der transzendentalen Einheit, die Kants Auffassung der Synthesis erhellt. Die Abhandlung beginnt mit Reflexionen zur Synthesis, die den historischen und systematischen Rahmen der Untersuchung bestimmen, und erläutert dann Unterscheidungen und Übergänge zwischen Kritik, Transzendentalphilosophie und Metaphysik als Teilen des Systems der reinen Philosophie. Damit wird die verkannte Funktion dieser Systematik in der Aufstellung des apriorischen Leitfadens für den Erkenntnisgebrauch der Vernunft umrissen. Ein Leitfadenproblem, mit dem sich die ,,metaphysische Deduktion" der Kategorien beschäftigt, liegt aber zuallererst im Kern der Kritik. Das zweite Kapitel legt diesen verschlüsselten Textabschnitt aus, insbesondere seinen grundlegenden, oft von der Frage nach der Vollständigkeit der Kategorientafel überschatteten Anspruch, die Begriffe a priori der Einheit aller Verstandesfunktionen ‑ der Synthesis der Anschauung und des Urteils ‑ systematisch darzustellen. Die Überlegung zur Verstandesfunktion gibt schließlich Anlass, die bislang nicht hinterfragte Annahme, die Ausdrücke ,,reiner Verstandesbegriff" und ,,Kategorie" seien bloß Synonyme, in Frage zu stellen.
