Performance art in Western Europe and North America developed in part as a response to the commercialisation of the art object, as artists endeavoured to create works of art that could not be bought or sold. But what are the roots of performance art in Eastern Europe and Russia, where there was no real art market to speak of? While many artworks created in the 'East' may resemble Western performance art practices, their origins, as well as their meaning and significance, is decidedly different. By placing specific performances from Russia, Latvia and Poland from the late- and post-communist periods within a local and international context, this book pinpoints the nuances between performance art East and West. Performance art in Eastern Europe is examined for the first time as agent and chronicle of the transition from Soviet and satellite states to free-market democracies. Drawing upon previously unpublished sources and exclusive interviews with the artists themselves, Amy Bryzgel explores the actions of the period, from Miervaldis Polis's Bronze Man to Oleg Kulik's Russian Dog performances. Bryzgel demonstrates that in the late-1980s and early 1990s, performance art in Eastern Europe went beyond the modernist critique to express ideas outside the official discourse, shocking and empowering the citizenry, both effecting and mirroring the social changes taking place at the time. Performing the East opens the way to an urgent reassessment of the history, function and meaning of performance art practices in East-Central Europe.

To właśnie artystyczne utarczki często najdobitniej uświadamiały sztywne granice społecznych akceptacji, tak jak wcześniej - w okresie PRL-u - dotkliwy brak dyskursu tożsamościowego (m.in. feministycznego, gejowskiego) czy kompensacyjny charakter oficjalnej sztuki nowoczesnej wskazywał bezapelacyjnie i ostatecznie na dzieła, które mogą być uznane za sztukę. Konsensus odwilży 1955 roku i agon przełomu po 1989 roku ramują dwie narracje o sztuce polskiej: tego, co miało być niewidoczne i tego, co skandaliczne, wątpliwe i ambiwalentne.

Cold War Camera explores the visual mediation of the Cold War and illuminates photography’s role in shaping the ways it was prosecuted and experienced. The contributors show how the camera stretched the parameters of the Cold War beyond dominant East-West and US-USSR binaries and highlight the significance of photography from across the global South. Die vorliegende Arbeit erforscht methodisch die "polnische" Kunst im nationalstaatlichen Rahmen anhand der Ausstellungspraxis zweier traditionsreicher, polnischer Institutionen - der Nationalgalerie Zacheta in Warschau und des Polnischen Pavillons auf der Biennale Venedig. Mit der Annahme einer anhaltenden Einflussnahme auf das Selbst- und Außenbild der polnischen Nation werden die polnische Kunstproduktion und Kunstförderung sowie deren gesellschaftliche Rezeption untersucht. Im 19. Jahrhundert nahm die polnische Kunst eine politische Funktion an: Sie kodierte eine nationale Idee, um zum Kampf gegen die Besatzungsmächte, den Zaren und den Kaiser aufzurufen. Sie transportierte Bilder, die das Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit zur polnischen Nation stimulierten und ein bestimmtes Bild der Nation konstruierten. Seit der Erlangung der staatlichen Souveränität (1918) wurde und wird bis zum heutigen Tag die Idee der nationalen Kunst in Polen weitertradiert und gleichzeitig an das sich verändernde Nationsverständnis angepasst. In diesem polnisch-spezifischen, geschichtlichen und kunstgeschichtlichen Kontext, der in drei Perioden nationaler Repräsentation - die nationalistische Periode, die kommunistische Periode und die Zeit nach der Wende - aufgeteilt wird, werden die nationalen Botschaften der politische Akteure und deren Wirkung auf das nationale und internationale Kunstpublikum sondiert, um die Konstruktion des "Nationalen" in der "polnischen" Kunst zu erschließen.
