"The legacy of the Modern Movement has gained legendary status, largely as a result of the appreciation of the masterworks and the visionary architectural concepts. In the reality of everyday life, however, it has been difficult to maintain the architectural creations of the Modern Movement in such a way that they still reflect the original intentions of their designers. Many buildings and ensembles of the Modern Movement have already been saved; the icons amongst these have even become so precious that they are treated like pieces of art rather than as buildings in everyday use. But despite the successes that have been achieved, many buildings and ensembles are still at risk of demolition or maltreatment. Conservation of architecture - and the conversation of Modern architecture in particular – has assumed new challenges. Rather than attempting to return a Modern building to its resumed original state, the challenge of these proceedings is to revalue the essence of the manifold manifestations of Modern architecture and redefine its meanings in a rapidly changing world of digital revolution, worldwide mobility and environmental awareness. This volume aims to provide a variety of platforms for the exchange of ideas and experience. A large, international group of architects, historians, scholars, preservationists and other parties involved in the processes of preserving, renovating and transforming Modern buildings has been invited to investigate the paradox of the Modern monument, and to reflect on the manifold dilemmas of change and continuity. The general theme is elaborated through five sub-themes. The sub-theme ‘Change and Continuity’ addresses the tensions between change and continuity from a historical-theoretical perspective. ‘Restructuring Cities and Landscapes’ focuses on the larger scale of city and landscape, while ‘Shifts in Programme and Flexibility’ draws attention to the scale of the building or building complex, and questions limits of re-use and flexibility. Los grandes edificios administrativos funcionan como un organismo complejo, resultado de diversos factores sociales, económicos, científicos, técnicos y culturales. Nos enfrentamos al tema bajo la observación de un aspecto clave, el trabajador y su equipamiento, en la consideración de que cada elemento que lo conforma lo define con precisión, con el propósito de reconocer las características del organismo al que pertenece. El análisis de la arquitectura adecuada al trabajo de oficina bajo una mirada introspectiva nos permite identificar algunas pautas que nos ayudan a encontrar un espacio adecuado a las necesidades de una empresa. La organización del trabajo dispone de herramientas que han sido ensayadas durante el siglo pasado y que muestran el engranaje de su funcionamiento y su resultado. Las respuestas arquitectónicas a cada una de estas organizaciones no tienen tanto que ver con la época en la que se originaron, sino que aparecieron para quedarse y perduran hasta nuestros días, en algunos casos con mínimas modificaciones a pesar de los enormes cambios técnicos, sociales y estructurales que se han ido desarrollando a lo largo de cien años. A partir de este análisis se establecen cuatro organizaciones que se presentan claramente identificadas. El orden geométrico de su estructura interna nos proporciona una denominación, lineal, modular, libre e informal, que denota un incremento del grado de desorden interno. Cada una de ellas dispone de un origen con unas condiciones sociales y económicas que difieren de las actuales, pero que si las estudiamos dentro de su contexto original, nos permite sacar algunas conclusiones sobre la idoneidad de su arquitectura en la oficina del siglo XXI.
