In this stunning collection of poems by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, acclaimed translator Ketaki Kushari Dyson brilliantly captures the energy and lyricism of the legendary poet’s verses. The title poem evokes the inner turmoil of a man who must return to the drudgery of work after visiting his home for the Durga Puja vacation. Haunted by his four-year-old daughter’s parting words, ‘I won’t let you go!’ he finds his anguish reflected in the vagaries of nature, with the earth echoing his pain. The other poems in this collection brim with Tagore’s compassionate humanity and delicate sensuousness. From detailing the nuances of intimate relationships to ruminating on the vast cosmos, these poems glow with a burning awareness of man’s place in the universe, reaffirming Tagore’s reputation as one of India’s greatest modern poets. In what a profound sadness are sky and earth immersed! The further I go, the more I hear the same piteous note: I wont let you go!

Rabindranath Tagore was born to a Brahmin family in Calcutta and through his writings became the literary voice of India. He developed a following for his work in Bengali, but he became a worldwide sensation after the English translation of his poem Gitanjali caught the attention of W.B. Yeats. He toured the world and became known for his spiritual and artistic presence and global views that bridged the East and West. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913, the first non-Western writer to achieve such an honor. In addition to poetry, Tagore also wrote short stories, plays, novels, and essays, and many of his paintings hang in museums. He also founded a school, Visva Bharati, which combined Hindu and Western influences. Tagore loved music, and two of his songs became the national anthems for India and Bangladesh. The Fugitive is one example of his artistic powers: We came hither together, friend, and now at the cross-roads I stop to bid you farewell. Your path is wide and straight before you, but my call comes up by ways from the unknown. I shall follow wind and cloud; I shall follow the stars to where day breaks behind the hills; I shall follow lovers who, as they walk, twine their days into a wreath on a single thread of song, "I love."

"Somudranil, I discovered, is of the rare kind who surrenders entirely to the emotional quotient of the material and lets his grasp on the language guide the rhythm of his prose. He is no more the Tagore who writes about his childhood. Instead, he becomes the younger Tagore who lived those young years. That's where Somudranil makes this book his own." - Sarthak Dasgupta (Filmmaker) What if you wake up in the middle of the night and find yourself transported back through time? Where the howling cries of the dacoits fill the air, palanquins swoosh past you, and the sprawling magical world enamors with all its squalor! Ever been to the wonderland? If no is your answer, peeking a bit into the 19th-century Calcutta won't hurt much. In this account of My Growing Years, the second memoir by Tagore surfaces a man of rare talent and wisdom-Rabindranath Tagore. But don't you want to know about the wonderland the man was once a part of, which led to his making? The house where he grew up, the stories of people who danced to their heart's content, and the timelessness of the period-all deeply embedded in My Growing Years.

Poetry Book Society Recommended Translation. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is India's greatest modern poet and the most brilliant creative genius produced by the Indian Renaissance. As well as poetry, he wrote songs, stories and novels, plays, essays, memoirs and travelogues. He was both a restless innovator and a superb craftsman, and the Bengali language attained great beauty and power in his hands. He created his own genre of dance drama and is one of the most important visual artists of modern India. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore's poetry has an impressive wholeness: a magnificent loving warmth, a compassionate humanity, a delicate sensuousness, an intense sense of kinship with nature and a burning awareness of man's place in the universe. He moves with effortless ease from the literal to the symbolic, from the part of the whole, from a tiny detail to the vast cosmos. He is religious in the deepest sense, wavering between a faith that sustains the spirit in times of crisis - or fills it with energy and joy in times of happiness - and a profound questioning that can find no enduring answers. To him the earth is a vulnerable mother who clings to all her offspring, saying 'I won't let you go' to the tiniest blade of grass that springs from her womb, but who is powerless to prevent the decay and death of her children. This is the revised and enlarged second edition of a substantial selection of Tagore's poems and songs translated with an illustrated introduction, notes and glossary by the bilingual writer Ketaki Kushari Dyson, who lives in Oxford. Poet, novelist, playwright, translator, linguist and critic, she is one of the outstanding Bengali writers of her generation, and has published more than thirty titles in her two languages, including acclaimed scholarly works on Tagore.
