Maitreyi este un personaj. Unul exotic, fermecător, cum nu mai este altul în literatura română. Inspirat din realitate, ce-i drept, însă acoperit cu iscusita imaginaţie a celui ce i-a dat viaţă: Mircea Eliade. Oricum am lua-o, pe calea imaginaţiei, ori pe cea a realităţii, legătura dintre Maitreyi şi Eliade nu poate fi negată sau trecută cu vederea. Însă povestea din spatele romanului Maitreyi al lui Eliade, sau a celui răspuns, Na Hanyate, semnat de Maitreyi Devi şi publicat la 40 de ani distanţă, nu face obiectul rândurilor de faţă. Şi aceasta pentru că Maitreyi Devi este mai mult decât un simplu personaj.Poetă, eseistă, prozatoare. Una dintre cele mai remarcabile femei pe care le-a dat Bengalul. Mereu în slujba celorlalţi. Maitreyi Devi a fondat, în 1964, Council for the Promotion of Communal Harmony şi a fost vice-preşedinte al All-India Women’s Coordinating Council. Fiica la fel de celebrului ei tată, Surendranath Dasgupta, profesor de filosofie la University of Calcutta, cu studii doctorale la Cambridge şi autor al celor cinci volume de istorie a filosofiei indiene, A History of Indian Philosophy, Maitreyi Devi a primit o educaţie aleasă. Fire sensibilă, scrie încă din copilărie poezii. Primul volum de versuri i-a apărut pe când avea doar 16 ani, purtând Prefaţa lui Rabindranath Tagore. De altfel, pe lângă cele patru volume de poezie scrise de-a lungul timpului, cele opt lucrări despre viaţa şi opera Guru-lui său, Rabindranath Tagore, Maitreyi a scris cărţi de filosofie sau cu tentă socială şi, de asemenea, cărţi de călătorie. Pentru Na Hanyate, romanul-replică la povestea lui Eliade, Maitreyi Devi primeşte în anul 1976 Sahitya Akademi Award, cea mai importantă distincţie din partea Academiei de Litere Indiene.Între lucrările sale despre Tagore se numără una mai aparte. Scrisă cu drag, din inimă, din dorinţa de a împărtăşi cu ceilalţi bucuria de a-l fi avut aproape pe Gurudev, de a-l fi văzut pe primul laureat Nobel al Asiei aşa cum puţini au avut şansa, Mongpute Rabindranath este una dintre cele mai citite cărţi despre Tagore din lume (Mihaela Gligor).
