Total Quality Management (TQM) is becoming more important as a way to improve productivity. One of the technical aspects of TQM is a system called the Taguchi method. This is an optimization method that, with a few precautions, can reduce test effort by an order of magnitude over conventional techniques. The Taguchi method is specifically designed to minimize a product's sensitivity to uncontrollable system disturbances such as aging, temperature, voltage variations, etc., by simultaneously varying both design and disturbance parameters. The analysis produces an optimum set of design parameters. A 3-day class on the Taguchi method was held at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in May 1991. A project was needed as a follow-up after the class was over, and the motor controller was selected at that time. Exactly how to proceed was the subject of discussion for some months. It was not clear exactly what to measure, and design kept getting mixed with optimization. There was even some discussion about why the Taguchi method should be used at all. Kissel, R. This book covers major case studies concerning Taguchi methodology, a statistical technique which is fast becoming important in quality control and productivity issues. The text examines, both constructively and critically, new applications of Taguchi methods and draws upon a large number of examples to illustrate how flexible and wide-ranging the techniques are. Included in the book are case studies from the automotive industry, from the electronics industry and process control industries and other manufacturing industries, such as injection moulding.

To quality engineers, noise refers to any factor that alters a product's designated function. Signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios--commonly used to evaluate the quality of communications systems--can help keep this type of instability to a minimum in products and processes. This book illustrates various types of S/N ratios, using examples from mechanical, chemical, electrical, and measurement fields, and shows engineers how to use these ratios to evaluate quality and reliability of products and processes.

Devoted to practical engineering problems from the fields of quality and reliability, bridging the gap between scientific research and theoretical methods on the one hand, and current industrial methods on the other. This special issue focuses on Taguchi methods and develops approaches to electrical circuit design that incorporate aspects of parameter tolerance variations at various stages of design. This is the first issue of this journal to focus on a single topic. Presented here are eleven articles covering design of experiments in an historical perspective, recent applications, new thoughts on well-established techniques, and current research issues. Provides case studies in the Taguchi method, and an extensive annotated bibliography of books on experimental design. Departments include book reviews, news digest, and an international calendar of forthcoming events.

This book is intended to introduce and familiarize design, production, quality, and process engineers, and their managers to the importance and recent developments in concurrent engineering (CE) and design for manufacturing (DFM) of new products. CE and DFM are becoming an important element of global competitiveness in terms of achieving high-quality and low-cost products. The new product design and development life cycle has become the focus of many manufacturing companies as a road map to shortening new product introduction cycles, and to achieving a quick ramp-up of production volumes. Customer expectations have increased in demanding high-quality, functional, and user-friendly products. There is little time to waste in solving manufacturing problems or in redesigning products for ease of manufacture, since product life cycles have become very short because of technological breakthroughs or competitive pressures. Another important reason for the increased attention to DFM is that global products have developed into very opposing roles: either they are commodities, with very similar features, capabilities, and specifications; or they are very focused on a market niche. In the first case, the manufacturers are competing on cost and quality, and in the second they are in race for time to market. DFM could be a very important competitive weapon in either case, for lowering cost and increasing quality; and for increasing production ramp-up to mature volumes.
