Penggunaan bahasa Melayu dalam pelbagai bidang kehidupan manusia semakin meluas, tetapi penggunaannya yang betul masih belum mencapai matlamat, khususnya bagi pelajar Cina yang sedang mempelajari bahasa Melayu. Oleh itu, kajian ini dilakukan oleh penyelidik bagi menguji tahap penguasaan tatabahasa, kata sendi nama bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan pelajar Cina Tingkatan Satu di Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Saint David, Melaka. Sampel kajian ini terdiri daripada 60 orang pelajar Cina Tingkatan Satu yang berasal dari ketiga-tiga kelas yang berbeza, iaitu IAI, IA3 dan IAS. Pengkaji mengambil sampel kajian secara rawak di mana setiap kelas akan mengambil seramai 20 orang yang terdiri daripada pelajar lelaki dan perempuan. Kaedah penyelidikan yang digunakan ialah kaedah tinjauan, iaitu dengan mengedarkan borang soal selidik dan Ujian Khas Tatabahasa, di samping kaedah pemerhatian juga digunakan oleh penyelidik bagi memerhatikan cara guru mengajar subjek bahasa Melayu dan respon pelajar terhadap cara pengajaran guru. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa prestasi pelajar Cina Tingkatan Satu terhadap penguasaan kata sendi nama bahasa Melayu di sekolah berkenaan masih berada pada tahap serderhana dan boleh dipertingkat lagi. Dalam perbincangan hasil kajian, penyelidik mengaitkan Teori Behaviorisme (Mekanis) dalam kaedah pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa Melayu,khususnya terhadap pelajar Cina yang mempelajari bahasa Melayu sebagai bahasa kedua agar guru-guru dapat menggunakan kaedah yang efektif dalam usaha menarik minat pelajar Cina terhadap kata sendi nama bahasa Melayu. Kesimpulannya, setiap pihak harus memainkan peranan yang signifikan dalam usaha meningkatkan penguasaan tatabahasa bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan pelajar supaya hasrat Dasar Pendidikan Negara yang menekankan penggunaan bahasa Melayu yang mantap dan betul dapat direalisasikan .
