Driving toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, you may decide to take one of the numerous backroads to avoid the traffic of the more touristy areas. One of those backroads, Highway 15, takes you across the Harvey "Pop" Powell Memorial Bridge, where Homer is selling copies of the Laurel Cove Banner for a quarter, and through the fictional town of Laurel Cove, population 278. Laurel Cove has one traffic light, really a flashing yellow light, slowing down visitors. Otherwise, you may miss the whittlin' bench in front of Webb's Grocery or Boots' Barber Shop, owned by the only barber and one of several part-time moonshiners in town. Further down Main Street, you turn left at the light in front of First Fidelity Bank, once robbed by Public Enemy Number 1, John Dillinger, and onto Church Street. After crossing Big Bear Fork, Reverend Mitchell waves as you notice the sign shows Sunday's sermon, "The Prodigal Son." Most residents know the sign is referencing Dr. Jay McMahan, fresh out of medical school, who grew up in Laurel Cove and is now returning home to assume the role of retiring Doc Hembree. Also, welcoming Jay is his best friend from birth, Dillon Webb. As the two friends resume their friendship and love for fly-fishing, they remember their first trip to Big Creek where Dillon's grandfather, Pop Powell, taught them to catch trout. As Jay and Dillon continue their trips into the mountains, they do so surrounded by the unique characters and humorous events that can only transpire in a small town on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains.

A creative non-fiction work built on stories about actual feuds, murder of individuals and disasters that occurred throughout Great Smoky Mountains prior to the area becoming a national park. The stories read like excerpts from a novel, but are based on true stories, some information taken from court documents and intervews. Reading these stories helps give the reader an image and a voice to those who used to live in the mountain areas of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. "As usual, Dr. Palmer spins a good yarn in the style, and often in the vernacular, of her beloved Appalachian kin folks. Some of the accounts were familiar but others were new to me. All were captivating and entertaining. As the old adage goes, history is a compilation of rumor. However, via scholarly interpretations of the clues she had to go on, she skillfully breathed life into these tales." Allen R. Coggins, author and Smoky Mountain tour guide

Is it possible that the woman who raised Abraham Lincoln was actually his half-sister, and that the man he knew as his grandfather had conducted a scandalous affair with a servant girl? Was Nancy Dude really a murderous witch, or the victim of relentless calamities that would stretch anyone beyond the bounds of sanity? Should Horace Kephart be considered a hero for his work to protect the area of the Great Smokies, where a moutain was named in his honor, or a drunken scoundrel who uprooted families from the homes and farms they'd had for generations? From Sam Houston's childhood among the Cherokee to the mysterious "road to nowhere", Great Smokies Myths and Legends makes history fun and pulls back the curtain on some of this national park's most fascinating and compelling stories.
