Urban designers and planners always try to tackle the urban issues from spatial, cultural and economical point of views; However, sometimes these issues were limited or, even more, created by current transportation system. The thesis will discuss about the relations of urban mobility and urban space and try to redesign urban space from transportation point of views. According to United Nation Population Division Report, half world's people will live in urban area by the end of 2008. The urban population will rise from 6.7 billion in 2007 to 9.2 billion in 2050. Right now, A lot of cities already suffered the traffic congestion, air pollution which caused by current transportation system and also create low quality of life, we can expect the life quality in urban area will deteriorate more in the future because of population growth. We need new types of thinking to solve these problems. This thesis will introduce a new type of Mobility-on-Demand System to Taipei City, which is the case study city because of its density and mixed-use characteristics. This system will supplement the current transportation system to make public transportation more efficient and private transportation faster. The Mobility-On-Demand System is composed by City Car and Roboscooter, which were developed by Smart Cities, MIT Media Lab. They are electric, small footprint, fordable and most important of all, they are private and also public. This thesis will talk about how can a city be transformed and people's life quality be improved with the help of the new mobility Mobility-On-Demand System.

Urban form always transforms when new transportation technology is deployed. Urban form and transportation technologies always coevolve. Many new technologies have been developed to solve the problems of greenhouse gas emission, air pollution, energy efficiency, high gas prices, traffic congestion, etc. Electric vehicles (EVs) and Mobility-on-Demand systems are two of these technologies. With the advancement of battery technologies, EVs are become the next mainstream product for Automobile industry. Meanwhile, there are many new concepts about various alternative types of car ownership, such as Mobility-on-Demand (MoD) systems, a one-way rental car sharing systems, for which the Smart Cities group of MIT Media Lab is doing research. The regulation and infrastructure of current cities are mainly designed to accommodate gasoline-powered and private owned vehicles. This thesis addresses how will urban fabric and space transform with the arrivals of EVs and MoD systems and what kind of service and urban infrastructure can be integrated when individual vehicles become a node of mobility network. The thesis focuses on Taipei City as a case study city and develops varies scale design strategies, ranging from charging infrastructure, street, sidewalk, curb, parking infrastructure, to building type. The thesis also discusses the benefit of EVs and MoD system may bring to a city.

The late twentieth century witnessed rapid changes not only in Taiwan’s economy, but also in its identity. Both economic as well as ideological restructuring have been basic elements in the transformation of postwar Taiwan, as rapid democratization opened a Pandora’s Box, and stirred a whirlwind of social discord. This volume considers such important questions as whether the old Taiwanese work ethic is a relic of the past, and whether Taiwan is likely to become a battleground of ideological wars. The book addresses Taiwanese nostalgia for Chinese culture; the rise and fall of postwar Taiwanese agrarian culture; the transformation of farmers’ social consciousness in the period 1950–1970; the place of Confucianism in postwar Taiwan; and the awakening of the “self ” and the development of a Taiwanese national identity in the post–World War II period. Finally, it considers whether “mutual historical understanding” may be the basis for Taiwan-Mainland relations in the twentyfirst century. This second edition includes two new chapters on the history of Taiwan after World War II, incorporating additional developments in Taiwan in the past decade. Insights extrapolated from an understanding of history are essential for grasping and solving the basic problems Taiwan now faces and, above all, the conflicted relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China.
