Equiano was captured as a 10-year-old boy by slave hunters, transported to the coast and sold to slave traders. He survived a harrowing crossing and ended up in Barbados. The boy passed from hand to hand and after a short time came to Virginia to a plantation owner, who in turn sold him to an English naval officer named Henry Pascal. As a personal servant, he participated in the Seven Years' War in America from 1757 to 1762. In 1762 he was resold to a plantation owner and returned to the West Indies. Here he was able to buy his own freedom, but remained with his former slave owner, the Quaker Robert King. In 1773, he participated in an exploratory voyage to the Arctic. Convinced of the Christian idea, he became a Methodist. Gröls Classics - English Edition

Sixteen of Australia's foremost poets are featured in this volume. They talk candidly about their lives and work: of the craft, the rigour, the pangs and pleasures of their calling; of winged moments caught, however fleetingly, on the page. These writers also speak of transformation and transcendence, the creative process, their individual modes and methods of writing and the act of writing itself. The interviews provide valuable insights on such topics as: gender and writing; landscape; the function of poetry and the poet's social role; influences embraced and withstood - literary, personal, local, regional, national, international. The writers and their poetry are discussed from both within and beyond Australian borders. This collection offers a broad range of Australian poets, most of whom are now in the middle to later years of their career. These poets have contributed significantly to the life and quality of poetry in Australia over recent decades, and continue to play pivotal roles in Australia's cultural domain today, as the country moves towards the threshold of a new century.

Referred to as a hero in "one of the most incredible and exciting games in Utah prep history", I lived a ´Cinderella´ type story that emerged from the 1969 Utah State Championship game. Written up in the local paper as "the single, greatest and momentous play in Utah prep football", this game will live forever in the minds of all those who witnessed the spectacle. Inspired by the outcome of that monumental game, Bill Marcroft, a local sportscaster and the play-by-play voice of the University of Utah football program writes, "Several times during the past thirty years, I´ve told the story (of the 1969 State playoff game) on the air whenever a situation looked bleak for one team or another. You play until the final whistle, gun, or buzzer, because on that day long ago, I learned that ´It in´t over till it´s over´!" Many interesting and unique events transpired leading up to the action-packed state game that made this experience even more special. The even ´greater story´ behind this momentous event adds to the magnitude of what had transpired on that November day. Parallels between the ´game of football´ and the ´game of life´ may be the most important and valuable lessons learned from what many may view as ´just a game´. For anyone who has lost hope when life´s challenges made it seem hopeless, this story may inspire you to go on.

Sid ‘One-Punch’ Luft, amateur-boxer, producer and Judy Garland’s third husband was the one man in her life who stuck around, helping her achieve a meteoric comeback in the 1960s. It was Luft who reversed the fortunes of an apparently faded career, seeing her triumph at Carnegie Hall, in ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘The Judy Garland Show’. Previously unpublished, Sid Luft’s intimate autobiography tells their story in hard-boiled yet elegant prose. It begins on a fateful night in New York City when the not-quite-divorced Judy and the not-quite-divorced Sid meet at Billy Reed’s Little Club. A straight-talking sharp shooter, Sid fell for Judy hard and fast and the romance persisted through separations, reconciliations, and later divorce. However, her drug dependencies and suicidal tendencies put a tremendous strain on the relationship. Sid did not complete his memoir; it ended in 1960 after Judy hired David Begelman and Freddie Fields to manage her career. But Randy L. Schmidt, acclaimed editor of Judy Garland on Judy Garland, seamlessly pieced together the final section of the book from extensive interviews with Sid, most previously unpublished. Despite everything, Sid never stopped loving Judy and never forgave himself for not being able to save her from the demons that ultimately drove her to an early death at age forty-seven in 1969. Sid served as chief conservator of the Garland legacy until his death at the age of eighty-nine in 2005. This is his testament to the love of his life. ‘In prose so brassy that it bruises the sensibilities, Luft… illuminates the dark side of life in the spotlight and dispels any sentimental illusions about the glories of show business in Hollywood’s classic age.’ - The New Yorker

"Land of the Marathas, Western India, 1641-1660 The Indian sub - continent is ruled by three tyrannical Sultanates... the powerful Mughals in the North, and the Shia rulers - Adilshah and Qutubshah in the South. The native population, supressed for centuries, is subjected to slavery, bigotry, injustice and even torture. Through generations of subservience, the very idea of freedom has been wiped from their minds. As incessant battles rage between the Sultanates, the soldiers who fight and die on the battlefields are mostly Marathas, sons of the soil. Villages and crops are repeatedly razed by the invading armies, men killed in both peacetime and war, their women abducted. Maharashtra, once a prosperous land ruled by competent native rulers and inhabited by peaceful people, has been reduced almost to a wasteland. In this dark era, the sixteen-year-old son of an Adilshahi jagirdar stands up to declare: “I shall not serve, and neither shall my people!” The dream of a free State and an identity for his peoplesmouldering in his heart, he dares to rebel against the powerful Sultan, Adilshah. He begins with nothing... no army, no weapons and an empty treasury. Yet he achieves what no soldier, chieftain or king has ever achieved in defiance of the imperialists who rule. 300 Brave Men is the incredible story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosale, a legendary warrior king, guerrilla fighter, brilliant tactician and clever diplomat. But above all, a remarkable human being. You have read history... now read his story..."
