“J.A. Jance does not disappoint.” —Washington Times The Chattanooga Times calls New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance, “One of the best—if not the best,” and this classic suspense masterwork featuring Seattle investigator J.P. Beaumont emphatically proves the point. In Taking the Fifth, a gruesome and very unusual murder plunges the intrepid Beau into a lethal cinematic nightmare. Michigan’s Flint Journal places Jance “in the elite company of Sue Grafton and Patricia Cornwell.” Taking the Fifth, now in a Premium Plus edition, is an ideal opportunity for fans of the author’s Sheriff Joanna Brady books to discover another side to the incomparable J.A. Jance.

'Will set your hair on end' Telegraph, Top 50 Books of the Year 'I forgot to breathe while reading The Fifth Risk' Michael Hofmann, TLS, Books of the Year The bestselling, no-holds-barred exposé of the people who are wrecking our democracy, by the master storyteller of our times 'The election happened ... And then there was radio silence.' The morning after Trump was elected president, the people who ran the US Department of Energy - an agency that deals with some of the most powerful risks facing humanity - waited to welcome the incoming administration's transition team. Nobody appeared. Across the US government, the same thing happened: nothing. People don't notice when stuff goes right. That is the stuff government does. It manages everything that underpins our lives from funding free school meals, to policing rogue nuclear activity, to predicting extreme weather events. It steps in where private investment fears to tread, innovates and creates knowledge, assesses extreme long-term risk. And now, government is under attack. By its own leaders. In The Fifth Risk, Michael Lewis reveals the combustible cocktail of wilful ignorance and venality that is fuelling the destruction of a country's fabric. All of this, Lewis shows, exposes America and the world to the biggest risk of all. It is what you never learned that might have saved you.

A person accused of a crime has the right against self-incrimination under the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Simply put, this means that if one is taken into custody, you have the right to keep your mouth shut and say nothing. During trial, the government has the burden to prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and you cannot be compelled to testify and may remain silent. In a criminal case, the jury is instructed by the judge that it cannot hold the defendant's failure to testify against him. In a civil case, however, the judge will instruct the jury that the refusal to testify should prejudice the defendant. This conundrum presents a real problem for a defendant who is defending a civil lawsuit, but also has exposure to criminal prosecution. In Taking the Fifth, Roscoe Carmichael III is arrested for distributing cocaine. While the TBI and police are executing their search warrant, they discover sex tapes of Carmichael and seven women. Carmichael claims that the tapes were made consensually and that the women knew they were being taped. Steine & Davis claim that Carmichael's secret videotaping of their encounters violated their privacy. How does Carmichael preserve his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in the criminal case and yet defend himself in the civil cases? The Fifth Amendment turns out to be a two edged sword which Steine & Davis skillfully hold against Carmichael's throat to vindicate the rights of their clients.

In this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller, after taking on a foreclosure case, defense attorney Mickey Haller fights to prove his client’s innocence—but first he must follow a trail of black market evidence to its sinister end. Mickey Haller has fallen on tough times. He expands his business into foreclosure defense, only to see one of his clients accused of killing the banker she blames for trying to take away her home. Mickey puts his team into high gear to exonerate Lisa Trammel, even though the evidence and his own suspicions tell him his client is guilty. Soon after he learns that the victim had black market dealings of his own, Haller is assaulted, too -- and he's certain he's on the right trail. Despite the danger and uncertainty, Haller mounts the best defense of his career in a trial where the last surprise comes after the verdict is in. Connelly proves again why he "may very well be the best novelist working in the United States today" (San Francisco Chronicle).
