What child would not be delighted by the story of bewildering matzoballs, miraculous latkes, unusual guests to a Bar Mitzvah, and a dog with a mysterious and exciting history? These are the contents of Cynthia Goren's "Tales from a Jewish Grandmother." In this collection, two stories for the very young and two for the older child subtly but convincingly stress the importance of respect and patience both for each other and for all of nature. The whimsy of the earlier stories will bring giggles to the younger set; the more serious and nuanced later stories will provide the thought and substance needed by an older child. Sprinkled with love and faith, heritage, and peoplehood, this anthology illustrates, above all, the Jewish child's thirst for the beautiful traditions of Judaism. "This delightful anthology of stories, suitable for children of varying ages, will open a child's eyes, heart, and mind to his or her connection to the dynamic and thriving culture of the Jewish people." -Danny A. Brass, DVM Book Reviewer for the National Speleological Society and Choice Magazine

"Like all good stories in the Yiddish tradition, the pleasure of Geras' collection comes as much from the telling as from what happens. These are stories within stories: the narrator remembers herself as a young child hearing them from her grandmother, as they cooked, hung up laundry, prepared for the Sabbath, or cleaned house for Passover. This framing of the stories emphasizes their continuing pleasure across generations; and customs, idioms, traditions, even recipes that the Jews brought with them from Eastern Europe are an unobtrusive part of the telling." --"Booklist," Starred

The best recipes collected over the years by a 100 year old Jewish Grandmother who considers entertaining a competitive sport. Her recipes not only taste good, but they have to look good, too. Belle's recipes are practical and unusual, and her ingredients are everyday item found in every kitchen. Although the book is written by a Jewish grandmother, this is not a kosher or even strictly Jewish cookbook. There are Chinese, Italian, German, Danish, and other nationalities represented among the recipes. Another lure to the book are the interesting tales of where and how she found many of the recipes, and events where she has used them. Finally, there are ideas of recipes that can be combined to present and unusual visual effect, like her 7 layer Jello mold table centerpiece, or her combination salad mold appetizer. Belle is a kitchen artist as well as a great cook and baker

Whenever anyone tells a tale, that tale sends a message to the listener. When a Jewish storyteller tells a tale in a Jewish setting, that tale sends a Jewish message. And when a Jewish woman tells a tale to other Jewish women, she sends a Jewish woman's message: how to act as a Jewish woman - toward her community, toward other people, and toward God. This book is a collection of such women's tales and an analysis of their messages. The Book of Jewish Women's Tales consists of seventy-five stories, told and transmitted within the last two generations by Jewish women from around the world - from places as diverse as Ethiopia, India, Azerbaijan, Yemen, Greece, Eastern Europe, Israel, and the United States. The majority of the stories were culled from the Israel Folktale Archives, a repository of almost 19,000 tales; others Barbara Rush collected personally. Each story begins with an introduction in which Rush identifies its origin, its theme and meaning, and any other pertinent information about the tale, such as the biblical or talmudic passages to which it relates. The volume also includes sources to encourage further study of Jewish women's tales. The book is divided into sections, including life-cycle events such as birth, marriage, motherhood, aging, and death; holidays in the yearly cycle and Shabbat; and sections dealing with women in Israel and the strength of women. Some of the tales read like traditional fairy tales filled with supernatural beings, fairy godmothers, and royalty; others are romantic tales; still others deal with rites of passage and conflicts between men and women or among women. The stories have two things in common: in all of them the women emerge as strong, victorious, and clever, and all of the stories, while they have universal appeal to women, contain distinctly Jewish messages. The heroine does not merely win her beloved; their children carry on the teachings of the Torah. Some of the tales are based on biblical stories in which the faith of pious women is rewarded by God; others are local legends that tell of actual events in Jewish history. The Book of Jewish Women's Tales is a remarkable collection. As an anthology, it will delight and entertain, but as a valuable sourcebook, it will educate and inform. Through her extensive research, Barbara Rush has enabled us to see from a woman's perspective, not only the common elements of Jewish women from all corners of the world, but also what they share with women from all cultures and religions.

The medical tapestry of the world is full of organisms too small to see, carried by flying and creeping creatures too numerous to eradicate. A while ago, DDT and the antimalarial drug chloroquine seemed sure to make us all safe from such invisible assault. It was not to be. The mosquito has become resistant to DDT; malaria is on the rise; although tapeworms rarely turn up any longer in the most lovingly prepared New York City gefilte fish, a worm may inhabit your sashimi; some strains of gonorrhea actually thrive on penicillin; there is even a parasite for the higher tax brackets—the "nymph of Nantucket"; and there are new ailments—legionnaire's disease, Lassa fever, and new strains of influenza. In the long run, one might bet on the insects and the germs. Meanwhile Dr. Robert Desowitz has written a delightful and instructive book.
