Set out on an enchanting journey through the verdant hills and hidden valleys of Spain's most storied regions with "Tales from the Hills of Hispania." This collection of myths and legends weaves the ancient threads of Cantabrian, Basque, Galician, and Asturian folklore into a tapestry of narrative brilliance. Discover the mystical Anjanas, engage with the mighty Basajaun, and feel the ethereal presence of the Santa Compaña as each story transports you to a world where the boundary between the earthly and the divine is as thin as a cobweb in the morning dew. Peel back the veil of history to explore realms where every mountain echo and every wave against the shore tells a story. From the Cuélebre's lair, coiled within the misty peaks, to the whispering forests where Trasnos play their tricks, "Tales from the Hills of Hispania" is a testament to the power of the Spain's cultural heritage, bringing to life a mythology that has breathed magic into the landscape for centuries. With tales as timeless as the land itself, this volume is a treasure for any aficionado of folklore and myth. These stories, curated with a passionate reverence for the local lore, offer a passage into the heart of Hispania's most profound mysteries and marvels. "Tales from the Hills of Hispania" is an invitation to wander in wonder through the rich legacies of an ancient past that still echoes in the modern age.

IN selecting these Spanish Tales for Beginners, three objects have been kept in view: (1) that they be good literature, (2) that they portray modern Spanish life, and (3) that they be interesting and not too difficult in language and thought. Some of the stories do not conform to all three rules,—the first two, for instance, do not portray modern Spanish life; but I hope that most of them will be found to conform fully. A few short lyric poems have also been included, since poetry forms an integral part of literature. Verse, moreover, is better for oral work and memorizing than prose. Spain has a rich and varied literature, from which other nations have freely drawn,—a literature that gives true expression to the life and aspirations of the Spanish people. The selections in this volume are taken from literary works that have been written in the past fifty or sixty years, and although they are inferior in some respects to the great master-pieces of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I believe that they have literary excellence, and they have, besides, the advantage of being written in the language of today and of describing present-day life. It is my greatest wish that this volume may awaken the students' interest in the civilization of Spain, and that it may serve as an introduction to the study of Spanish literature. The integrity of the texts has been preserved so far as the exigencies of a beginners' book permit, but the following changes have been made: (1) Some words or passages have been omitted, chiefly in the earlier stories. The parts thus omitted are, for the most part, digressions or uninteresting descriptive passages. Omissions have generally been marked by four suspensive points, or by three at the beginning of a story. Except at the beginning of a story, three suspensive points form a part of the punctuation of the several authors. (2) The orthography has been made to conform to that now prescribed by the Royal Spanish Academy. (3) In the earlier stories, le has been substituted for the feminine indirect object-pronoun la, and los for the masculine plural direct object-pronoun les.

This exciting new anthology gathers together Puerto Rican folktales that were passed down orally for generations before finally being transcribed beginning in 1914 by the team of famous anthropologist Franz Boas. These charming tales give readers a window into the imaginations and aspirations of Puerto Rico’s peasants, the Jíbaro. Some stories provide a distinctive Caribbean twist on classic tales including “Snow White” and “Cinderella.” Others fictionalize the lives of local historical figures, such as infamous pirate Roberto Cofresí, rendered here as a Robin Hood figure who subverts the colonial social order. The collection also introduces such beloved local characters as Cucarachita Martina, the kind cockroach who falls in love with Ratoncito Pérez, her devoted mouse husband who brings her delicious food. Including a fresh English translation of each folktale as well as the original Spanish version, the collection also contains an introduction from literary historian Rafael Ocasio that highlights the historical importance of these tales and the Jíbaro cultural values they impart. These vibrant, funny, and poignant stories will give readers unique insights into Puerto Rico’s rich cultural heritage. Folk & Fairy Tales, Legends, Myths & Sagas from Spain & Portugal. These first tales herald from a broad set of sources and translations. There is a real flavour of the peninsular in these stories, reflecting as they do Spain and Portugal's long history of thought, religion and conflict. I hope you enjoy these stories.
