Time to Talk provides a powerful and accessible resource for practitioners working to improve children’s language and communication skills. Showcasing effective approaches in schools and settings across the country from the early years through primary and secondary education, it summarises research on what helps children and young people develop good communication skills, and highlights the importance of key factors: a place to talk, a reason to talk and support for talk. This timely second edition has been fully updated to reflect Pupil Premium, curriculum, assessment and special needs reforms, and can be used by individual practitioners as well as supporting a whole-school or setting approach to spoken language. It includes: whole-class approaches to developing all children and young people’s speaking and listening skills; ‘catch-up’ strategies for those with limited language; ways of differentiating the curriculum for those with difficulties; ways in which settings and schools can develop an effective partnership with specialists to help children with more severe needs; models schools can use to commission their own speech and language therapy services; examples of good practice in supporting parents/carers to develop their children’s language skills; and answers to practitioners’ most frequently asked questions about speech and language. Now in full-colour, this practical and engaging book is for all who are concerned about how to help children and young people with limited language and communication skills – school leaders, teachers, early-years practitioners, and the speech and language therapists they work with.

I have always loved writing poetry, and I have always written poems for my family and friends for different special occasions in a rhyming format. But ever since I was baptized and became a Christian, I felt this urge in my heart to put into words how good it makes me feel as I talk with Jesus every day! I read my Bible every day, and I love the New Testament! I always read a small booklet called Our Daily Bread, which has scriptures and a short one-page story for each day of the month. I was inspired by this little book. I really enjoy reading it. I'm hoping my book will make it easier for the working people to get in a little time to talk to our Lord and Savior every day. On their way to work, they ride the bus or if they carpool, or maybe even during their lunchbreak. I also hope to reach retired people who might be at home alone and might find some comfort by reading my book. It might also help them learn where a few passages are in the Bible.

Conversations about controversial topics can be difficult, painful, and emotionally charged. This user-friendly guide will help you engage in effective, compassionate discussions with family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers about race, immigration, gender, marriage equality, sexism, marginalization, and more. We talk every day—and we often do it without thinking. But, as you well know, there are some things that are harder to talk about—especially issues pertaining to politics, culture, lifestyle, and diversity. If you’ve ever struggled in a conversation about a “controversial” topic with a loved one, work colleague, or even a stranger, you know exactly how uncomfortable and heated the discussion can become. And even if you are one of the lucky few that expresses themselves eloquently, how do you move beyond mere “lip service” and turn words into actionable change? This groundbreaking book will show you how to get to that important next level in difficult conversations, to talk in an authentic and straightforward way about culture and diversity, and to speak from the heart with tools from the head. Using a simple eight-step approach, you’ll learn communication strategies that are supported by research and have been practiced in classrooms, work meetings, therapy sessions, and more. We constantly hear about friends and colleagues whose family members are not speaking to each other because of different political opinions, who’ve exchanged words that have mutually offended one another. If silence is one end of the continuum and verbal conflict anchors the other, how do we reach a middle ground? How do we take part in the “in between” spaces where both parties can speak and listen? With this book as your guide, you’ll learn to navigate these difficult conversations, and take what you’ve learned beyond the conversation and out into the world—whether it’s through politics, social justice movements, or simply expanding the minds of those around you.

Kids, It's Time We Have THE TALK because doing the sex-thing or doing the drug-thing can ruin a kid's life, but NOT doing The God-thing can ruin a kid's eternity. Using teachings from John Paul II, Fulton J. Sheen, Thomas Merton, Mother Teresa, and others, John R. VanBuskirk tells his kids about God & God-stuff, Living & Dying, Heaven & hell. VanBuskirk explains the purpose of life to his twenty-something-year-old kids and the importance of getting through life rather than merely being successful in it. He challenges his kids to: - Love the world more than any other creature God has ever given life to - Possess the heart of a servant and add to what God has created as one of His co-creators and partners - Know God in ways equal to the saints and angels in Heaven - Achieve a special, personal intimacy with God - an intimacy that the angels might envy Kids, It's Time We Have THE TALK will help you keep First-Things-First. It will enable you to explain why First-Things are First-Things. It's the talk parents are obligated to have with kids. It's the talk each of us is obligated to have with ourselves.

In the last 15 to 20 years, writing centers have placed greater importance on tutor training, focusing on teaching tutors best practices in fostering student writers’ engagement and writing skills. Writing Center Talk over Time explores the importance of writing center talk and demonstrates the efficacy of tutor training. The book uses corpus-driven analysis and discourse analysis to examine the changes in writing center talk over time to provide a baseline understanding of the very heart of writing center work: the talk that unfolds between tutors and student writers. It is this talk that, at its best, motivates student writers to continue to improve their writing and scaffolds their learning and that makes tutors proud of the service that they provide. The methods and analysis of this study are intended to inform other researchers so that they may conduct further research into the efficacy of writing center talk.
