(Exerts from the Introduction) Tamar's Healing will not only address negative, toxic shame, but also speak to healthy, true shame, which is necessary as we journey toward our true selves. That's God's desire for this, God's people. My position is that African (Black) Americans' dealings with shame is a uniquely different phenomena because of the historical "training" or socialization African Americans have acquired and became accustomed to during and since slavery. Tamar's Healing will address many types of abuse, but will predominately deal with sexual abuse as depicted in 1 Samuel 13: 1 - 22. Sexual abuse must be discussed more openly because it is still a forbidden subject matter in many African American families and communities. Therefore, the overall goal of Tamar's Healing is to help bring people out of the darkness of misery and hopelessness into the light of God's glorious love. Far too countless people have experienced dark, traumatic events in their lives, and cannot find or see their way out. For many, it grows and festers, and has adverse affects on their lives. In this book, I will not only address negative, toxic shame, but also speak to healthy, true shame, which is necessary as we journey toward our true selves. That's God's desire for this, God's people. Prayerfully, Tamar's Healing will help me to "flesh out," so to speak, the concepts and direction I feel God will have me to utilize in order to serve others in the counseling context.

"There are so many people who have been sexually violated who have placed that secret in a box, buried it deep within their subconscious, and have thrown away the key. It becomes a secret which makes them sick in some way. That sickness is played out in substance abuse, alcoholism, sexual promiscuity, mental illness, physical illnesses, obesity and low self worth." Excerpt from the book Heal Beyond the Pain Of Your Past My purpose for writing this book is two fold. One is to heal myself beyond the pain of being sexually violated. The other is to assist those who have been sexually violated in healing beyond the pain of their past. I was inspired by God to use the character Tamar, the daughter of King David as my example. I have carried Tamar in my heart for 10 years after attentively reading her story in the Bible. Something about her story stayed with me and wrestled against me. It was not until 7 years later that I would remember the pain of being gang raped at the age of 13. That is when I associated with Tamar and her ordeal. Then I knew why her story stood out and touched me. This book is not just for the Tamar's of the world who have been victims of sexual violation. But, it is for every family that held on to the secret and did not do anything to assist their loved one in healing beyond the pain. There is a healing that needs to take place in the lives of everyone who has ever been affected by being raped, molested or a victim of incest. Enough is enough, we will no longer exist in silence, but instead we will live and exist in freedom from the ordeal and know that we are free to be at peace, in joy, vibrant, radiating, healthy and alive. Dr. Tonya Keatz-El, D.Div

King David's virgin daughter, Tamar, was raped by her brother and was forever changed. Her physical wounds healed, but her spirit remained broken. "The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity, but a broken spirit who can bear" (Prov. 18:14). I am Tamar. You are Tamar. Anyone who has ever experienced abuse on any level (i.e., physical, sexual, mental, emotional, etc) can relate to some aspect of Tamar's tragedy. Abuse wounds more than just the physical body; it damages our ability to walk in the Spirit and produce the fruit of the Spirit. Still, there is hope. God is able to heal and renew our Spirit so that we can bear fruit. "Dynamic, encouraging, biblically sound, practical...These are just a few words that come to mind as I read over this book. It leads you to desire healing, freedom, and restoration. Only those who want real change should journey through this story of hope. It is going to shake up and challenge mindsets, and be the catalyst for women (and men) to be free from deep rooted strongholds and bondage."
