The Chinese Tang Dynasty, lasting for 289 years from 618 to 907 AD, was a golden age, when literature, art, technological innovation, and trade flourished. To support a currency-based economy for a population that numbered 80 million by the end of the dynasty, coins were produced in the millions. As with most other pre-Modern Asian coins, the Tang coins were made of leaded bronze, had a square hole in the center, and bore a four-character inscription on the obverse side; this type of coin is called a "cash coin," or simply "cash." One of the two main series of Tang cash coins bears the inscription Qian Yuan Zhong Bao (abbreviated QYZB). The foremost previous reference on QYZB coins by Shôji Yoshida (2005) numbers 256 varieties of standard-sized (value-1) coins, including 123 with a plain reverse and 133 with a reverse mark. Building on Yoshida's classification, this identification guide focuses on fine-scale variation in plain-reverse varieties. It begins with introductory material on the historical context of QYZB coins, their method of production, what defines a variety, fake QYZB, terminology, and identifying features. The body of the guide provides detailed descriptions for 457 varieties or variants, with original obverse and reverse rubbings illustrating 461 coins. Two short appendices discuss whether and how to clean cash coins, and present guidelines for purchasing them on the Internet. While this guide includes many plain-reverse varieties not defined in Yoshida's book, the converse is also true. In fact, people attempting to identify value-1 QYZB will need both guides, and will undoubtedly still encounter coins not identifiable in either. Much remains to be learned about value-1 QYZB, which will continue to make the study of these coins interesting.

Metallurgical Analysis Of Chinese Coins At The British Museum written by Helen Wang and has been published by British Museum Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Antiques & Collectibles categories.

This publication brings together the results of metallurgical analysis on Chinese coins undertaken at the British Museum during the last 15 years. The largest project looked at the metal content of Chinese cash coins over a period of more than 2,000 years. Although the results of the survey were published in 1989, the full details of the survey and photographs of the coins tested are presented here for the first time, along with an introduction by Joe Cribb and comments by Michael Cowell. Since then, smaller metallurgical projects have been undertaken at the British Museum, looking at specific questions, such as the iron content of Song dynasty coins, the brass content of Qing dynasty coins, and the question of metal supply for Qing dynasty coins. The results of these projects are brought together here for ease of reference, and are presented in chronological order of the material examined. In the last decade, numismatists and scientists in China have also been looking at similar questions, using coins from archaeological sites. Zhou Weirong's new book, Chinese Coins: Alloy Composition and Metallurgical Research, is now available, and an English version of the introduction, postscript and contents pages are published here.

This book focuses on the money of Eastern Central Asia to c. AD 800, a period of over 900 years, across a vast geographical area with a very diverse population of different cultures and traditions. The only relevant historical accounts are those found in the Chinese dynastic histories, yet these contain few references to money in Eastern Central Asia. This study therefore depends almost entirely on the archaeological evidence for money found at sites in the region, in the form of coins and contemporary documentary evidence. The book is arranged in four parts. The first part presents the background to the study, the second the numismatic evidence, the third gives the evidence for money in the contemporary documents excavated at sites in Eastern Central Asia, and the concluding part brings together the data from the numismatic and documentary evidence to create a new framework for money in early Eastern Central Asia.

This book offers an in-depth description and analysis of Chinese coin-like charms, which date back to the second century CE and which continued to be used until mid 20th century. This work is unique in that it provides an archaeological and analytical interpretation of the content of these metallic objects: inscriptive, pictorial or both. As the component chapters show, these coin-like objects represent a wealth of Chinese traditional folk beliefs, including but not limited to family values, social obligations and religious desires. The book presents a collection of contributed chapters, gathering a diverse range of perspectives and expertise from some of the world’s leading scholars in the fields of archaeology, religious studies, art history, language and museology. The background of the cover image is a page from Guang jin shi yun fu 廣金石韻府, a rhyming dictionary first published in the ninth year of the Kangxi Reign (1652 CE). The metal charm dates back to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), depicting two deities traditionally believed to possess the majic power of suppressing evil spirits. The stich-bound book in the foreground is a collection of seal impressions from the beginning of the 20th century. Its wooden press board is inscribed da ji xiang 大吉祥 by Fang Zhi-bin 方質彬 in the year of bing yin (1926 CE).
