The book analyses the cultural transfer of tango from Buenos Aires to Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. Based on case studies of Berlin and Paris, it examines a cultural phenomenon that was part of an international urban entertainment industry. The period of investigation concentrates on a historical phase that was marked by social debates about high and popular culture. The book aims to close a gap in research, where cultural phenomena are often investigated on a national level, leaving aside the methodological consideration of transnational interconnections. The argumentation is based on a concept of hybrid culture that criticises the constructedness of the concept of cultural spaces as self-contained national contexts of tradition and focuses on the changes of cultural styles, forms and tradition in the process of migration and cultural contact instead. An empirical basis, created by examining the transfer channel, international dissemination and reception, serves as a starting point for the analysis of the mutual influence and entanglement of the cultural history of the examined cities. The transnational research perspective of this book is part of the newer urbanization research and aims to contribute to the historical analysis of European urban culture.

Theatre Across Oceans: Mediators Of Transatlantic Exchange allows the reader to enter and understand the infrastructural 'backstage area' of global cultural mobility during the years between 1890 and 1925. Located within the research fields of global history and theory, the geographical focus of the book is a transatlantic one, based on the active exchange in this phase between North and South America and Europe. Emanating from a rich body of archival material, the study argues that this exchange was essentially facilitated and controlled by professional theatrical mediators (agents, brokers), who have not been sufficiently researched within theatre or historical studies. The low visibility of mediators in the scientific research is in diametrical contrast to the enormous power that they possessed in the period dealt with in this book.

Emotional Cities offers an innovative account of the history of cities in the second half of the nineteenth century. Analyzing debates about emotions and urban change, it questions the assumed dissimilarity of the history of European and Middle Eastern cities during this period. The author shows that between 1860 and 1910, contemporaries in both Berlin and Cairo began to negotiate the transformation of the urban realm in terms of emotions. Looking at the ways in which a variety of urban dwellers, from psychologists to bar maids, framed recent changes in terms of their effect on love, honor, or disgust, the book reveals striking parallels between the histories of the two cities. Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Seit den neunziger Jahren des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts ist eine wachsende Beliebtheit des Tangos als Musikgenre und Tanz in europäischen Metropolen zu beobachten. Eine Rezeption ähnlichen Ausmaßes gab es in Europas Metropolen bereits achtzig Jahre zuvor einmal. Ursprünglich entstand der Tango Ende des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts in einer zur Metropole wachsenden Region am Rio de la Plata. Die großen zeitlichen als auch geographischen Abstände der Tango-Rezeptionen lassen vermuten, dass Differenzierungen zwischen den verschiedenen Rezeptionen vorgenommen werden müssen. Es wird in dieser Arbeit darum gehen, die kulturspezifischen Unterschiede des an verschiedenen Orten und zu verschiedenen Zeiten getanzten Tangos aufzuzeigen. Dieser Suche liegt folgende Hypothese der Verfasserin zugrunde: Der Tango entstand am Rio de la Plata als eine kulturspezifische Ausdrucksform einer Gruppe von Menschen. In seinem Ambiente, in dem er gelebt wurde sowie in den Formen, in denen er getanzt wurde, finden sich die Geschichten und Befindlichkeiten derer wieder, die ihn entstehen ließen oder ihn von seinem Entstehungszeitpunkt an bis in die Gegenwart tanzten. Sie nahmen in der besonderen Weise, die als Tango erkennbar ist, Gestalt an. Von dem Moment an, in dem der Tango auch in Europas Metropolen Einzug fand, war dagegen eine Veränderung des Tangos erkennbar. Die Veränderung betraf die Inhalte des Tangos als kulturspezifische Ausdrucksform wie auch die Bedeutung des Tangos für die ihn rezipierende Gruppe von Menschen. In der Decodierung der Symbole, die im Tango am Rio de la Plata und den Metropolen Europas existierten, lässt sich diese Veränderung aufzeigen. Gleichzeitig dienten die Symbole zur Identifizierung mit dem Tango. Die Bedeutungsveränderung entspricht der Semiotisierung eines kulturellen Artefaktes in einem fremden Kulturrahmen. Der Analyse des Semiotisierungsprozesses liegt die Vermutung zugrunde, dass die den Tango Rezipierenden, im Folgenden Tanzender genannt, seine individuellen Befindlichkeiten und Bedürfnisse in der Wahrnehmung und im Praktizieren des Tangos auf den Tango übertrugen. Die aus der Hypothese abzuleitenden Fragestellungen können im Rahmen dieser Arbeit weder vollzählig noch umfassend beantwortet werden.
