In a world where the past never truly stays buried, Silent Requiem weaves a gripping tale of crime, redemption, and the haunting echoes of guilt. Roshan and Monica, two seasoned criminals with a shared history of deception and violence, find themselves at a crossroads when their carefully constructed lives begin to unravel. Forced to flee, they assume new identities in a remote village, where they plan to hide from their past and the authorities closing in on them. But the village, with its simple yet profound way of life, begins to work a quiet magic on them. As they become entwined in the community’s struggles—fighting against corrupt forces, advocating for basic necessities, and helping to build a better future—they discover a sense of purpose that had long eluded them. Their criminal skills, once used for personal gain, are now redirected toward protecting the village from a ruthless industrialist bent on exploitation. As they navigate the moral complexities of their new lives, Roshan and Monica are torn between the shadows of their past and the possibility of redemption. Their growing attachment to the village and its people forces them to confront the stark reality of their previous choices. Can they truly change? Or will the silent requiem of their guilt and the lives they’ve taken forever haunt them? Silent Requiem is a powerful narrative that explores the thin line between good and evil, the possibility of transformation, and the unspoken truths that linger in the silence of our lives. It is a story of unexpected hope in the face of overwhelming darkness, where even the most hardened souls can find a path to redemption—if they are willing to face the music of their past.

New Zealand's deceptively simple but effective program to improve public services New Zealand has long been considered at the forefront of public administration, experimenting with new ways of organizing and delivering public services. Even so, successive New Zealand governments had mixed results from using traditional public management tools to lift the performance of the public service and address persistent problems that required multi-agency action. In 2012 the government decided to try something different. As part of a reform package called Better Public Services, the government challenged the public service to organize itself around achieving just ten results that had proven resistant to previous interventions. The plan was deceptively simple: set ambitious targets and publicly report on progress every six months; hold small groups of public managers collectively responsible; use lead indicators; and learn from both success and failure. This book explores how and why the New Zealand government made progress and how the program was able to create and sustain the commitment of public servants and unleash the creativity of public entrepreneurs. The authors combine case studies based on the experience of people involved in the change, together with public management research. They explain how ambitious targets and public accountability were used as levers to overcome the bureaucratic barriers that impeded public service delivery, and how data, evidence, and innovation were used to change practice. New Zealand experimented, failed, succeeded, and learned from the experience over five years. This New Zealand experience demonstrates that interagency performance targets are a potentially powerful tool for fostering better public services and thus improving social outcomes.

Gene Targeting and Embryonic Stem Cells is a practical guide designed for the rapidly growing number of researchers who are moving into this field. Provides details on how to culture, transfect and differentiate established cell lines, and how to isolate new cell lines. Gene targeting experiments are described for a number of cell types, including ungulate fetal fibroblasts, murine ES cells, human embryonal carinoma cells and human ES cells, and include protocols for gene-targeting vectors, DNA transfection and RNA interference. The recent isolation of human embryonic stem cells and the potential of these cells for therapeutic applications has generated an entirely new methodology. Similarly, gene targeting methodology has recently been extended to nuclear donor cells in ungulate species. This volume will be invaluable for both new and established researchers in the field of human embryonic stem cells, and to biotech companies engaged in the production of transgenic proteins in livestock, xenotransplantation and the development of animal models.

Are upstart competitors taking deadly aim at your company's products and markets? Richard A. D'Aveni, author of the famous attacker's handbook Hypercompetition, presents coun-terrevolutionary strategies and tactics that any industry leader or established company can use to defend itself against revolutionaries, disrupters, or hypercompetitors. The secret lies in making the rules, not breaking them, D'Aveni says, because rule makers still rule. Arguing that "profits and prosperity come not from revolution but stability and orderly change," D'Aveni presents a commanding framework that will enable any resource-rich or clever defender to gain Strategic Supremacy by being first to define the playing field. D'Aveni demonstrates how global powerhouses such as Disney, Microsoft, and Procter & Gamble have achieved preeminence by reconceptualizing their product portfolios as powerful competitive arsenals he calls "spheres of influence." Essentially a new way to compete by restructuring portfolios around a core geographic/product market, spheres enable any company to influence the behavior and positioning of rivals. In immensely readable prose, D'Aveni describes how prevailing spheres of influence can be used to create legal business equivalents to a "concert of powers" and other industry structures that mix cooperation with competition. Just one of the potent functions of a corporate sphere, D'Aveni shows, is to contain competitors of equal size (as NBC contained ABC). Spheres can also be used to stabilize an entire industry's global power system. A glance at the detailed table of contents will provide a sense of the wealth of new information contained in this essential handbook of global warfare, including "how-to" tools the reader will need to measure and map the pattern of competitive pressure in any industry and to interpret the meaning and strategic implications of these pressure patterns for his or her position within the industry's power hierarchy.

This groundbreaking work by leading social psychologists, who have all contributed in important ways to the psychology of group perception, focuses in particular on three interrelated issues: (1) whether groups are seen to be diverse or relatively homogeneous; (2) whether groups are seen as real and stable or only transitory and ephemeral; and (3) whether group membership derives from some essential quality of the members or rather is based on social constructions.
