This is one of a thousand stories dealing with the transition from innocence to a maturity stage where unforeseen events forced this change to occur sooner and faster than expected. The death of a father forcing an older brother to become the strong figure in a family, the absence of both parents often causes the same circumstances. In my case it was a sudden change in government brought by a revolution and followed by family separation in exile at an early age. I have often heard so many similar stories from older Jewish friends about the fragmentation of families during the Nazi era. The name changes to save a life, the denials of ethnicity and religion in order to survive. The quest for Gods given freedom does not know ethnic background or frontiers. My story is no different from those who have risked everything to live in a free society. We often associate these stories with Nazi Germany, Communist China or the old Soviet Union. Its hard to conceive, yet a reality that the same circumstances could happen just ninety miles from our shores in a country that was always ( and I believe still is) traditionally and culturally strongly linked to the United States. I write this book with dual purpose. One is to pour my heart out and leave a written legacy on my experience to my children. As much as a father tries to explain verbally, time tends to erase the memories. The second purpose is to serve as an inspiration to all those who today seek freedom. Every human being should have freedom to worship, freedom to speak their minds and express their opinions, freedom to travel, freedom to prosper in abundance and decide who their elected leaders will be through free elections. These freedoms still do no exist in Cuba today. In spite of some recent cosmetic changes and Castros mummified state, his younger brother is still preaching the same lies designed to create an illusion of change. After more than fifty years of totalitarian government, the Castro brothers along with their puppets in Venezuela and Panama still rule like old dinosaurs from a bygone era.

To most people, tarmac markings are hieroglyphics writ large: an obscure language that greets us as we glide down toward the earth. It is a code both intimately familiar and radically alien. On the Tarmac re-conceives this code. Designer Dennis Pieprz, who spends countless hours taxiing to distant terminals as part of his work, documented his travels, armed with boundless curiosity and an iPhone. As if collecting postcards along his journey, Pieprz framed images not to convey instructions but to capture vivid patterns and surprising juxtapositions, rigorous geometry and playful shadows. By freeing the tarmac from utility, Pieprz's photos allow new meanings to emerge, exploring poetry of line work and the ballet of human activity. They are about catching glimpses of the hyper-local amid relentless globalization. They are about slowing the pace and paying attention. Most of all, they are about seeking the sublime in the everyday.

Seasoned Traveller, Dominic Reeve, writer of many acclaimed books on the Travellers' way of life - as it is, not romanticised - here tells us of the period when Travellers were more or less universally changing from the horse drawn waggon to the age of the lorry and trailer (caravan). The book has the added interest of giving us a glimpse into the private life of the great painter and Romani Rai, Augustus John, of whom the author was a friend. Reeves' wife Beshlie - who illustrates this book - was a frequent (and the last) model for the renowned painter.

It was 1972. It was summer - and the living was easy! Arthur Jackson has a good job, no ties and no responsibilities, but it is not enough - he wants adventure and he wants to see the world!Based on the author's real life experiences and illustrated with photographs from the time, Fifty Shades of Tarmac tells the fictional story of how a naive young British truck driver obtains his first job driving a Mack on the continent of Europe. His first trip with all its pitfalls and novel experiences takes him from Rotterdam to Bremerhaven via Moutiers and Salzburg and then back to Rotterdam. It is told with humour, introducing a number of colourful characters, and providing a personal and unusual insight into the life of a truck driver in the 70s at a time when Europe still had frontier posts and custom restrictions. It will be of interest to truck drivers, Mack fans and other transport enthusiasts and those who simply want to learn more about the social history of Europe in the 1970s.
