Sganarelle y Martina forman un matrimonio que acostumbra reñir porque él es un leñador holgazán y presuntuoso. Por eso un día en que dos criados buscan a un médico que alivie a la hija de su patrón de una extraña enfermedad, Martina decide jugarle una broma pesada a su marido y les dice que en el bosque hay un médico con un carácter tan excéntrico que, para que confiese sus conocimientos, se le debe dar una paliza. Los criados siguen sus instrucciones al pie de la letra de tal forma que, cuando Sganarelle niega ser médico, lo tunden a golpes, provocando que él reconozca lo que ellos quieren. Al ser conducido a la casa de la enferma, Sganarelle descubre que la joven Lucinda no ha hecho más que inventar su mal para evitar que la casen con el hombre que ella no quiere; en realidad Lucinda ama a Leandro, un joven que no puede competir con la riqueza del otro pretendiente. Conmovido, Sganarelle promete ayudar a los jóvenes a escapar, pero con tan mala suerte que, cuando se descubre que los enamorados han huído, él es señalado como responsible, y condenado a morir en la horca. Finalmente el problema se resolverá cuando Leandro y Lucinda regresen a pedirle perdón a su padre, y a informar que Leandro acaba de recibir una herencia. La reconciliación es general, incluso Sganarelle perdona a Martina por la broma tan pesada que lo ha puesto al borde de la muerte, pero le advierte que a partir de ahora tendrá que aguantarle sus recién descubiertos talentos como médico.
