This book contains the compilation of studies from a 5-year project aimed at improving the Chinese teaching and learning as a second language, for non-Chinese speaking preschoolers in Hong Kong. In this project, a home-school-community model was used in an attempt to address the teaching and learning of Chinese for non-Chinese speaking preschoolers, moving from a traditional school centred teaching approach to a holistic approach. This allows them to learn in the same space and environment on the same topics, creating an inclusive classroom that does not compromise the teaching and learning of Chinese for both local and non-Chinese speaking preschoolers. Issues such as medium of instruction, language progression, silent period, multicultural teaching assistants, multilingual learning facilitators, parent changes, and effective teaching are studied and discussed.

This book inspires educational practitioners with special regard to the way how practice in the frontline service is able to inform leadership and policy decision. It empowers them to identify what features are counted as professional and how they could be turned into sources for developing wise judgment and eliciting creative acts in teaching, lesson planning and course design, collaboration, and knowledge excavation to shape policy decision and planning. In addition, for those who are used to conceive the world and their practice from a positivist tradition may find the insights of this book illuminating particularly when they are looking for a paradigm shift in understanding their practice. Last but not least, educators and teacher educators in particular will find the ideas in this book more promising in escalating the awareness of teachers of the next generation towards what is ‘good’ (phronesis) in terms of their professional attitude and actual performance (informed by both techne and episteme) in their relevant settings.

With the purpose of exploring the critical possibilities offered by the global crisis of coronavirus pandemic, this volume presents the collected works of scholars, educators and practitioners worldwide, bringing to the readers a broad array of perspectives on how COVID-19 inspires us to rethink, redefine, and make sense of the theoretical and pedagogical approaches that can be applied in various educational contexts. Part Two reflects on the online learning experiences of students, as well as the teachers’ strategies to cope with changes as the COVID-19 pandemic unleashed unprecedented disruptions in class. Part Three looks into a range of case studies regarding the digital divide, cross-border schooling, cyberbullying, and cross-disciplinary skill training in the post-pandemic workplace, highlighting the importance of creating a positive learning environment. Part Four draws on the observations and experiences of frontline teachers, to examine ways to optimize the digital learning experiences of students in and outside the classroom. This volume will be a useful reference for scholars in Education, Communication, Applied Linguistics, Social Work, and Positive Psychology.
