In this book, Gaby Thomson-Wohlgemuth explores the effects of ideology on the English-to-German translation of children’s literature under the socialist regime of the former German Democratic Republic. Giving prominence to extra-textual factors, the study undertakes a close investigation of the East German censorship machinery, showing that there was a close correlation between the socialist ideology propagated by the regime and the book selection process itself. Through an analysis of the contents of the print permit (censorship) files and the afterwords found in many books, Thomson-Wohlgemuth demonstrates that literature was re-written not only to placate the censor but also to directly guide the reader down the correct ideological path, both in the selection and interpretation of each translated text. Thomson-Wohlgemuth begins this engaging study with a concise but thorough historical background of East German children's literature, setting the context for an examination of how the state and party operated to control the development of the genre. She highlights the fact that there was multi-level censorship at work, with the Unity Party propagating certain ideological literary policies, and the publishers self-censoring when selecting suitable texts for translation and publication. This book serves as an exemplary study of how publishers collaborated with the state in all Eastern European countries, and should be of interest to historians and children’s literature scholars alike.

Ein Jäger wohnte mit seiner Frau allein am Waldrand. Er war sehr mutig und schoss Bären, Wölfe und Wildschweine. Nur vor den Räubern, die mitten im Walde in einem riesengroßen Baum hausten, hatte er wie alle anderen große Angst. Doch eines Tages verfolgte er ein besonders großes Wildschwein und gelangte dabei zum Lager der Räuber. Zum Glück waren diese betrunken und schliefen ihren Rausch aus. Nur der kleine Jäger, der noch ein Kind war und keinen Alkohol trinken durfte, wachte und schlug Alarm. Vor Schreck gab der Jäger einen Schuss ab, der den Hut des kleinen Räubers traf. Kein Räuber durfte seinen Hut abnehmen und das schon seit vielen Jahren. Ihr könnt euch denken, dass die Räuber weder Seife noch Kamm kannten. Aber nun gab es zwei Löcher in dem Hut des kleinen Räubers, durch die die Meise zu ihren Jungen fliegen konnte, die auf dem Kopf des kleinen Räubers ein Nest besaßen. LESEPROBE: „Aufhören!“, schrie der Räuberhauptmann, „los, los — fangt die Pferde ein! Gulasch kochen! Ich habe furchtbaren Hunger!“ Da zogen die Räuber hastig davon. Den Jungräuber ließen sie zurück. Er hing in seiner Astgabel, einen ganzen Tag und einen zweiten. Der Maienregen konnte ihn nicht wecken und auch der Blitz nicht und der Donner. Er schlief und schlief und schlief. Er schlief drei volle Wochen! Dann endlich erwachte er. Alle Knochen taten ihm weh. Er jammerte vor Schmerz. Und als er sich mühsam aufrichtete, da piepte es unter seinem Hut. „Teufel, Blitz und Spinne“, stöhnte der Jungräuber, „was zum Kuckuck ist das? Bei mir piept es! Mein Kopf ist kaputt!“ Er saß steif vor Entsetzen. Vor ihm, auf einem Zweig, hüpfte eine Meise. Sie trug eine grüne Raupe im Schnabel. Unter seinem Hut aber piepte es immer heftiger. Da riss der Jungräuber sich den Hut vom Kopf. Zitternd vor Angst tastete er auf seinem Haar herum. Er griff in ein Vogelnest, und darin hockten junge Meisen! Der Räuber klemmte den Hut zwischen die Beine und sammelte die jungen Vögel in seine linke Hand. Es waren neun. Sie sperrten die Schnäbel auf. Der junge Räuber lachte und lachte. Er lachte so laut, dass die alte Meise erschrocken davonflog. Bei meinem Hute, fuhr es dem Jungräuber durch den Kopf, bei meinem Hute, ich habe den Räuberschwur gebrochen! Er sah sich ängstlich um und stülpte sich rasch den Hut auf. Aber in seiner linken Hand saßen die jungen Meisen. Er sah sie an, schüttelte den Kopf und murmelte: „Ihr müsst doch ins Nest zurück!“
