Illustrierte Fassung aller 4 Bände »Tausendundeine Nacht« ist die berühmteste Sammlung morgenländischer Erzählungen und zugleich ein Klassiker der Weltliteratur. Von ihrer historischen und literarischen Bedeutung sind sie allenfalls mit den Märchen der Gebrüder Grimm vergleichbar. Die hier vorliegende erste deutsche Übersetzung aus arabischen Originaltexten stammt von dem Orientalisten Gustav Weil und wurde zwischen 1837 und 1841 erarbeitet. Gustav Weils Werk erschien ab 1837 (vollständig umgearbeitet 1865) und basierte auf den Texten der ersten, sogenannten Bulaker Ausgabe von 1835 Bisher wurden die Geschichten aus Tausendundeiner Nacht fälschlich gleichgesetzt mit Märchen für Kinder, was dem Original als Geschichtensammlung für Erwachsene mit zum Teil sehr erotischen Inhalten nicht gerecht wird. »Sie ist ein vollkommenes Muster der Schönheit, daß man sie nicht anders geschaffen wünschen könnte; sie hat weder zu viel, noch zu wenig, es ist, als wäre sie von Perlenwasser gebildet; ein Mond leuchtet aus allen ihren Gliedern hervor; ihre Stirne ist der Vollmond, ihr Wuchs der Zweig eines Baumes, ihr Atem ist Moschus: kein Mensch gleicht ihr.« Mit Fußnoten des Übersetzers Bei dem Namen Gottes, des Gnädigen und Barmherzigen, Friede und Heil über unsern Herrn Mohammed, den Obersten der Gesandten Gottes, auch über seine Familie und Gefährten insgesamt; Friede und Heil immer fortdauernd bis zum Tage des Gerichts. Amen, o Herr der Welten! Das Leben der Früheren ist eine Lehre für die Späteren, dazu daß der Mensch die Lehren, welche anderen zuteil geworden sind, schaue und sich daran belehre, und die Geschichte der älteren Völker lese und sich daraus unterrichte. Gelobt sei Gott, der die Begebenheiten der Früheren als Unterricht für Spätere aufgestellt hat. Zu dieser Art von Belehrung gehören nun auch die Erzählungen: »Tausend und eine Nacht« genannt. Gender and sexuality have long held an important place in western attitudes towards the people and regions of the world-from the titillating accounts of harem life in the Middle East to terrifying captivity narratives of North America. The Erotic Margin is a first attempt to pull together the large, disparate, and often contradictory literature, and view it as a corpus. Schick argues that such images served to construct spatial difference, and thereby helped Europe represent its own place in the world during an age of rapid geographical expansion. Informed by the recent literature on human geography as well as feminist and postcolonial theory, The Erotic Margin focuses on erotica and sexual anthropology as well as travel literature in which, from the eighteenth century on, both traveler and destination were portrayed in unmistakably gendered and sexualized terms. Reviewing examples ranging from the New World to India, the Near East to black Africa, and the South sea islands to the Barbary Coast, the book reflects on why foreign women were variously portrayed as alluring or threatening, foreign men as effeminate weaklings or dangerous rapists, and foreign lands as sexual idylls or hearts of darkness.
